CORSAIRS OPEN BY DEFEATING BABSON

BABSON PARK, MA-The University of Massachusetts Dartmouth’s swimming team got their 2005-06 season off to a successful start.

The Corsair women defeated Babson, 134-93, and the men defeated the Beavers, 123-110, at BC’s campus pool.

The women won 12 of the 13 events. Senior Seanna McRae (East Taunton, MA/Taunton HS) won the 200-yard individual medley in 2:23 and the 100-yard breaststroke in 1:12.74. Junior Meagan Coache (New Bedford, MA/New Bedford HS) won the 50-yard freestyle in 26.38, and the 100 free in 58.73. Sophomore Katelyn Chase (Acushnet, MA/New Bedford HS) won the 1000-yard freestyle in 12:10, and the 100-yard butterfly in 1:06.12. Junior Sarah Toltin (Sandwich, MA/Sacred Heart HS) won the 100-yard backstroke in 1:05.45, senior Kelly Kidd (Denville, NJ/Morris Knolls HS) took the one-meter diving with 233.80 points and the three-meter diving with 219 points, and the 200-yard medley relay team of McRae, Coache, Toltin and sophomore Hannah Blount (Nantucket, MA/Nantucket HS) was first in 1:59.

The men won seven of 13 events. Sophomore Frank Pearson (Niantic, CT/East Lyme HS) won the 1000 freestyle in 11:23 and the 500-yard freestyle in 5:31, freshman Andrew DiBenedetto won the one-meter diving with 230.30 points and the three-meter diving with 194.85 points, and senior Garrick Wong (Needham, MA/Needham HS) won the 50-yard freestyle in 22.87. The relay team of Wong, senior Gino Leite (Fall River, MA/BMC Durfee HS), junior Tom Cakounes (Chelmsford, MA/Chelmsford HS) and junior Nicolas Almeida (Auburn, MA/Auburn HS) won the 200-yard medley relay in 1:44. And the group of Cakounes, Almeida, junior Adam Barkley (Berea, OH/Berea HS) and Jay Brinley won the 400-yard freestyle relay in 3:33.13.

“We swam well,” said UMass Dartmouth Head Coach Cathy Motta. “It was a total team effort, and it was the first time the men have beaten Babson since I’ve been coaching here. It was exciting, and I’m looking for us to improve next week.”

The Corsairs will visit St. Michael’s next Saturday.
