NORTH DARTMOUTH, MA-The University of Massachusetts Dartmouth’s swimming teams tuned up for their championships this weekend by meeting Bentley in a dual meet at the Tripp Athletic Center pool Wednesday evening.

The Falcons won both matches. The women downed UMass Dartmouth, 152-91, while the men defeated the Corsairs, 154-83.

UMD’s women won four of 13 events. Junior Meagan Coache (New Bedford, MA/New Bedford HS) won twice. She took first place in the 100-yard individual medley in 1:04.22, and won the 100-yard freestyle in 57.29 seconds. Senior Kelly Kidd (Denville, NJ/Morris Knolls HS) won the one-meter diving with 232.28 points and the three-meter diving with 269.80 points. Her score in the three-meter competition was an NCAA qualifying mark. In order to be invited to the NCAA Championships, she must hit the qualifying mark twice and be ranked highly by the selection committee after they view videotape.

Senior Gino Leite (Fall River, MA/BMC Durfee HS) won twice for the UMD men. He won the 1000-yard freestyle in 11:02.19, and also was victorious in the 200-yard butterfly in 2:12.26.

“Basically, we used this as a prep meet for the championships this weekend,” said UMass Dartmouth Head Coach Cathy Motta. “We swam well. Our women swam good times, and a lot of them are faster than the times we used to seed them for the Little East Championships. We are going to rest up for a couple of days, take it easy, cut back and get ready for this weekend.”

Both Corsair teams are now 3-2 with the defeats. Bentley’s men improved to 2-2, while their women are now 3-1. The UMD women will return to action at the Little East Championships Saturday at the Tripp Athletic Center pool. The men will compete at the Eastern Collegiate Athletic Conference Championships at Lemoyne University in Syracuse, NY.
