NORTH DARTMOUTH, MA-After taking time off for the holidays and a training trip, the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth’s swimming team split their first match of the second semester. The Corsair women defeated Clark, 153-131, but the men lost to the Cougars, 151-136, at the Tripp Athletic Center Saturday afternoon.
The UMass Dartmouth women won 11 of 16 events. Junior Meagan Coache (New Bedford, MA/New Bedford HS) and senior Seanna McRae (East Taunton, MA/Taunton HS) each won four times. Coache won the 50-yard freestyle in 26.20 seconds, the 100-yard freestyle in 58.10 seconds, and the 100-yard butterfly in 1:03.98. She was also a member of the winning team in the 200-yard medley relay team (2:03.31).
McRae won the 100-yard backstroke in 1:05.26, the 200-yard backstroke in 2:22.18, and the 200-yard breaststroke in 2:46.02 and was on the winning 200-medley relay team.
Sophomore Katelyn Chase (Acushnet, MA/New Bedford HS) won the 200-yard butterfly in 2:23.51, sophomore Hannah Blount (Nantucket, MA/ Nantucket HS) and freshman Ashley Wong (Needham, MA/Needham HS) were members of the victorious 200 medley team, and senior Kelly Kidd (Denville, NJ/Morris Knolls HS) won both the one-meter diving with 206.15 points and the three-meter diving with 237.40 points. Sophomore Renee Krusznya, who just joined the Corsairs after transferring from Westfield State, won the 200-yard freestyle on 2:10.67.
The men won six events. Senior Gino Leite (Fall River, MA/Durfee HS) won the 200-yard breaststroke in 2:26.84 and the 200-yard individual medley in 2:09.03. Junior Nicolas Almeida (Auburn, MA/Auburn HS) won the 50-yard freestyle in 23.02 seconds, and was a member of the winning 200-yard medley relay team (1:47.97). Senior Garrick Wong (Needham, MA/Needham HS) won the 200-yard freestyle in 1:54.40, and was a member of the victorious relay team, as were juniors Adam Barkley (Berea, OH/Berea HS) and Tom Cakounes (Chelmsford, MA/Chelmsford HS). Sophomore Frank Pearson (Niantic, CT/East Lyme HS) won the 1000-yard freestyle in 11:11.32.
“We had some good performances, considering that we were tired, and battling illness,” said UMass Dartmouth Head Coach Cathy Motta. “The men’s meet would have been a little bit closer if we hadn’t been missing two swimmers. Overall, I was really pleased with how well we swam. We have a busy week ahead of us, and I hope that everyone can get healthy soon.”
The Corsair women improved to 5-2 with the win, while the men fell to 3-3. Clark’s women dropped to 5-3, while the men improved to 5-1. UMass Dartmouth will return to action when they visit Salem State to take on the Vikings and Elms Tuesday evening.
