BRISTOL, RI-The University of Massachusetts Dartmouth’s swimming teams saw their winning streaks end at the Roger Williams campus pool Wednesday evening.

The Corsair men and women, who had each won their first three matches, fell to RWU. The Hawk women downed UMass Dartmouth, 119-102, while the RWU men defeated the Corsairs, 117-102.

Each UMD team won six events. For the women, senior Seanna McRae (East Taunton, MA/Taunton HS) won the 100-yard backstroke in 1:06.33 and the 200-yard freestyle in 2:10.10, and junior Meagan Coache (New Bedford, MA/New Bedford HS) won the 50 freestyle in 26.63 seconds and the 100 butterfly in 1:02.25. And both McRae and Coache were members of the victorious 200-medley relay team, which won in 2:03.00 and also included sophomore Katelyn Chase (Acushnet, MA/New Bedford HS) and sophomore Hannah Blount (Nantucket, MA/ Nantucket HS). Junior Sarah Toltin (Sandwich, MA/Sacred Heart HS) won the 100 free in 58.78 seconds.

Junior Nicolas Almeida (Auburn, MA/Auburn HS) won three events to lead the men. He won the 50 freestyle in 23.58 seconds; the 100 free in 51.32 and was a member of the victorious 200-medley relay team, which finished first in 1:47.33. Senior Gino Leite (Fall River, MA/BMC Durfee HS) won the 100 breaststroke in 1:06.06 and was on the 200-medley relay team, as was junior Tom Cakounes (Chelmsford, MA/Chelmsford HS), who also won the 100 butterfly in 59.28. Senior Garrick Wong (Needham, MA/Needham HS) was the fourth member of the 200-medley relay team, while junior Adam Barkley (Berea, OH/Berea HS) placed first in the 200 freestyle in 1:55.65.

“We swam well, but we were missing four swimmers tonight, so we didn’t have the depth that we usually have,” said UMass Dartmouth Head Coach Cathy Motta. “A lot of people had season best time.”

Both Corsair teams are now 3-1. They will take a couple of weeks off from competition, returning to action when they host Bentley Wednesday, November 30th.
