WINOOSKI, VT-After two meets, the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth’s swimming team is still undefeated.
The Corsair women defeated St. Michael’s, 164-129, and the men downed the Knights, 155-141, at the Ross Sports Center pool Saturday afternoon.
The men, who are 2-0 for the first time in the seven years that Head Coach Cathy Motta has been in charge, clinched the victory by winning the final event, the 200-yard freestyle relay. If SMC had won the relay, the teams would have tied.
UMD’s women won 12 events. Senior Seanna McRae (East Taunton, MA/Taunton HS) and junior Meagan Coache (New Bedford, MA/New Bedford HS) each won four times. McRae won the 200-yard freestyle in 2:09.76, the 100-yard breaststroke in 1:13.69, the 200 individual medley in 2:23.08, and was a member of the 400-medley relay team that was victorious in 4:25.26. Coache won the 50 freestyle in 2:65.9, the 100 freestyle in 5:86.9, and the 50-yard butterfly in 2:84.9, and was a member of the winning medley relay team. Junior Sarah Toltin (Sandwich, MA/Sacred Heart HS) won the 50 backstroke in 30:49 and the 100 backstroke in 1:07.20, and was on the relay team, while sophomore Hannah Blount (Nantucket, MA/Nantucket HS) was on the medley relay team, and sophomore Katelyn Chase (Acushnet, MA/New Bedford HS) won the 100-yard butterfly in 1:07.23. Senior Kelly Kidd (Denville, NJ/Morris Knolls HS) took both the one-meter diving 141.90 points) and the one-meter optional diving (172.45 points).
The men won nine events. Junior Nicolas Almeida (Auburn, MA/Auburn HS) won the 100-yard freestyle in 51.89 seconds, and was on the 400-medley relay team (victorious in 3:57.05) and the 200-yard freestyle relay team (which won in 1:34.45). Senior Garrick Wong (Needham, MA/Needham HS) won the 100-yard backstroke in 1:24, and was on both relay teams. Senior Gino Leite (Fall River, MA/BMC Durfee HS) won the 200 individual medley in 2:11.55 and was on the 400 medley relay team, junior Tom Cakounes (Chelmsford, MA/Chelmsford HS) won the 50 yard butterfly in 26.70 and was on the 400 medley relay team, junior Adam Barkley (Berea, OH/Berea HS) won the 50-yard backstroke in 29:06 and was on the 200 yard freestyle relay team, and senior Jay Brinley (Melrose, MA/Boston College HS) was on the freestyle relay team. Freshman Andrew DiBenedetto won the one-meter diving with 140.45 points.
“We’re swimming well, and we are fortunate to have good numbers this year, so our depth is really coming into play,” said Motta. “It was a good meet overall. Every single person scored points for us, which is a good thing.”
Both teams will take 2-0 records into their meet at Bridgewater State Tuesday evening.
