UMass Dartmouth extends Little East Conference
men's tennis championship streak to five in a row
(Dartmouth, MA) - With four singles victories and a pair of doubles wins, UMass
Dartmouth captured its fifth consecutive Little East Conference men's tennis championship
held at UMass Dartmouth on April 29. Compiling a total of 24 points, the Corsairs
outdistanced second-place Rhode Island College (19 pts) and both Southern Maine and
Plymouth State (tied for 3rd, 8 pts) to defend their LEC mens tennis championship
for a fourth straight time.
The victory also represented Coach Warren
Preti's eighth consecutive combined men's and women's LEC tennis championships.
Coach Preti's Corsairs started their string of five straight men's titles in 1996.
Under Preti's stewardship, UMass Dartmouth's women's tennis team captured the LEC
women's crown in 1996, 1997 and 1998, before Preti stepped down as women's tennis
coach prior to last year.
Junior Jim Green (Harwich, MA) captured his second LEC singles championship
with a #2 singles victory to go along with his #4 singles title last year. Green
was a 6-1, 6-3 winner for the #2 singles crown. Three Corsairs won their first LEC
championships in singles, including freshman Trevor Cabral (Dartmouth, MA)
at #3 with a 6-3, 6-0 victory, sophomores Tim Warren (Fall River, MA) at #
5, a 6-3, 7-5 winner and Jason Warren (Fall River, MA) at #6 singles. Warren
lost his first set, 3-6, and trailed in the second set, 5-1, before coming back to
win the second set in a tiebreaker, 7-5. Warren also prevailed in a third-set tiebreaker,
7-6, for his first singles championship.
In doubles competition, senior Mike Gomes (Dartmouth, MA) earned his second
career LEC doubles title by teaming up with Tim Warren to take the #2 doubles title.
Gomes and Warren were 6-1, 6-3 winners in their match. Gomes was a #2 doubles champion
last year as well. Jason Warren and senior captain David Coe (Jefferson,
MA) were the #3 doubles champions to round out the Corsairs title effort. Warren
and Coe were 6-1, 6-3 winners.
For the 2000 season, UMass Dartmouth posted a 7-4 overall record. In singles competition,
Tim Warren led the Corsairs in victories with 8 wins against only 3 losses. Coe
and Green tied for second in victories with 7 wins each against 4 losses, while Cabral
finished with 6 wins and 2 losses. Jason Warren had a winning record in singles
at 5-3, while Gomes finished at 4-7. In doubles competition, the Corsairs most
productive team was the pairing of Gomes-Tim Warren with a record of 6-4. Cabral
and Jason Warren posted a 5-3 mark in doubles. When Jason Warren was paired with
Coe in doubles they had a 4-1 record. UMass Dartmouth finished the season 37-26
in singles and 19-11 in doubles.
