UMASS DARTMOUTH BASEBALL TEAM FALLS TO WHEATON

NORTH DARTMOUTH, MA-Three pitchers combined to pitch a five-hitter as Wheaton defeated the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth's baseball team, 5-1, in a non-conference game at the UMass Dartmouth Athletic Complex Thursday afternoon.

The Corsairs scored their only run in the bottom of the eighth inning. Sophomore right fielder Kevin Raudonaitis (Dartmouth, MA/Dartmouth HS) led off with a single against Jared Barnes, the second of three Wheaton pitchers, and came around to score on a pair of errors. Raudonaitis and junior catcher Mike Maclean (Spencer, MA/David Prouty HS) each had two hits for UMass Dartmouth.

Run-scoring singles by Pat O'Connor and Mark Baumer staked the Lyons to a 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning. Bases-loaded walks to Scott Guillerault and O'Connor in the fifth made it 4-0, and O'Connor's sacrifice fly in the top of the seventh accounted for Wheaton's fifth and final run. Brandon Leonard had three hits for the Lyons.

Josh Moore, who allowed three hits while walking one batter and striking out seven, went seven innings to earn the win for Wheaton, improving to 2-1. Sophomore right-hander Brian Vanasse (Sterling, MA/Wachusett HS), the first of three Corsair pitchers, took the loss.

UMass Dartmouth fell to 3-8 with the defeat, while Wheaton improved to 9-6 with the victory. The Corsairs will return to action when they host Salve Regina Friday.
