Umass Dartmouth Baseball Team Bows To Salve Regina

NORTH DARTMOUTH, MA-Salve Regina scored six runs in the seventh and eighth innings to break the game open and went on to defeat the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth's baseball team, 12-3, in a non-conference game at the UMass Dartmouth Athletic Complex Friday afternoon.
The Seahawks, who led, 6-3, after six innings, scored twice in the top of the seventh and four more times in the eighth to expand their lead.
The Corsairs took a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first. Junior catcher Mike Maclean (Spencer, MA/David Prouty HS) doubled with two out. Senior first baseman Dan Mancini (Marlboro, MA/Marlboro HS) followed with a run-scoring double, then came around to score on errors by SRU shortstop Steven Tressler and winning pitcher William Riggieri.
SRU took the lead for good in the top of the second. Alex Bush singled and took second on an error by UMass Dartmouth starter Jason Thompson (Sr. West Bridgewater, MA/Plymouth North HS). Bobby Kemple singled, Brendan Haire drove in a run with an infield out, and Joseph Leafe tripled to make it 3-2.
Kemple singled home two runs and Haire singled home another in the third. The Corsairs came right back to score in the fourth. Junior designated hitter Will Mahoney walked, moved to third on a single by sophomore right fielder Kevin Raudonaitis (Dartmouth, MA/Dartmouth HS), and scored on freshman third baseman Dave McGuire's (Plainville, MA/King Philip Regional HS) infield grounder.
Kemple singled in a run and Hair drove in a run with an infield out for SRU in the seventh, while Bush's two-run double highlighted a four-run Seahawk eighth inning.
Thompson allowed seven runs and nine hits in six innings of work. He took the loss, and fell to 0-2. Riggieri allowed eight hits in eight innings to earn the victory, improving to 4-0.
UMass Dartmouth fell to 3-9 with the defeat, while SRU improved to 15-5 with the victory. The Corsairs will return to action when they begin Little East Conference play with a doubleheader against visiting Plymouth State Saturday at 12 noon.
