NORTH DARTMOUTH, MA-Junior lefthander Will Mahoney (Mattapoisett, MA/Old Rochester HS) pitched a two-hitter and junior right fielder Evan Britto (Rochester, MA/Old Rochester HS) drove in the only run of the game with a sacrifice fly as the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth's baseball team defeated Plymouth State, 1-0, to earn a split of their Little East Conference doubleheader at the UMass Dartmouth Athletic Complex Thursday afternoon. The Panthers won the opener, 8-1.
Mahoney was dominant, walking two and striking out 10 in the nightcap. He retired 19 batters in succession between the second and eighth innings, and allowed only one PSU batter to reach second base.
Panther lefthander Jim Van Gyzen was nearly as dominant, holding UMass Dartmouth to just three hits. The Corsairs scored the only run of the game in the seventh. With one out, senior first baseman Dan Mancini (Marlboro, MA/Marlboro HS) walked, moved to second on a walk to junior catcher Mike Maclean (Spencer, MA/David Prouty HS), and went to third when senior designated hitter Eric Griswold (Taunton, MA/Taunton HS) singled. Britto's sacrifice fly scored Mancini.
Mahoney was the winner, improving to 1-2. Van Gyzen took the loss and fell to 0-3.
PSU right-hander Chip Hale pitched a complete game victory in the opener, allowing five hits, walking two and striking out nine.
UMD tied the score in the bottom of the first inning. Freshman second baseman Peter Gomez (Bridgewater, MA/Bridgewater-Raynham HS) singled, stole second and came home on Maclean's RBI single.
Scott Begalle's two-run single broke a 1-all tie in the third and gave the Panthers the lead for good in the opener. Begalle and Josh Roberti singled in runs in a three-run eighth, and Steve Campo and Roberti drove in runs in the ninth.
Hale earned the victory and improved to 2-1. Freshman right-hander Matt Kurth (Chilmark, MA/Martha's Vineyard HS), the second of three UMass Dartmouth pitchers, took the loss and fell to 1-2.
UMass Dartmouth is now 4-10 overall and 1-1 in Little East Conference play after the split, while Plymouth State is now 6-8 and 1-1. The Corsairs will return to action when they host Brandeis Sunday.
