Baseball Team Wins at Rhode Island College

PROVIDENCE, RI-Junior left-hander Will Mahoney (Mattapoisett, MA/Old Rochester HS) scattered seven hits over eight innings and the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth's baseball team took advantage of 14 hits and defeated Rhode Island College, 11-4, in a Little East Conference game at Anchormen Field Thursday afternoon.
Mahoney allowed three runs, just two of them earned, in eight innings while the Corsairs built an early lead and cruised to their victory.
Junior catcher Mike Maclean (Spencer, MA/David Prouty HS) drove in a first-inning run with an infield out as UMass Dartmouth took an early 2-0 lead. Senior designated hitter Eric Griswold (Taunton, MA/Taunton HS) drove in two runs with a third-inning single as the Corsairs doubled their lead. Freshman third baseman Dave McGuire (Plainville, MA/King Philip Regional HS) and freshman center fielder Sean Smolinsky (Hull, MA/Hull HS) drove in runs in the sixth inning to make it 6-1.
A solo homer by senior first baseman Dan Mancini (Marlboro, MA/Marlboro HS), sophomore right fielder Dylan Zygmont's (Swansea, MA/Case HS) double and an infield out by junior left fielder Rob LoMuscio (West Roxbury, MA/Catholic Memorial HS) allowed UMD to add three runs and make it 9-3 in the top of the seventh, and two more runs crossed in the top of the ninth on wild pitches by Andy Racicot, the third RIC pitcher.
Mahoney earned the victory, improving to 2-2. Rhode Island College starter Eric Thibault (Somerset, MA/Somerset HS), who was charged with nine runs in 6 1/3 innings, took the loss and fell to 2-3.
UMass Dartmouth improved to 5-11 and 2-1 in the Little East Conference with the victory, while the Anchormen fell to 8-12 and 1-2 in LEC play. The Corsairs will return to action when they host UMass Boston in a Little East Conference doubleheader Saturday afternoon.
