UMass Dartmouth baseball rally stalls, Corsairs fall to JWU, 8-5

(Dartmouth, MA) -- Trailing, 7-1 heading into the bottom of the eighth inning, the UMass Dartmouth offense finally came alive. After scoring four runs on four hits to cut Johnson and Wales' lead to two runs, the Corsairs couldn't get any closer, falling 8-5 in a non-conference game at UMass Dartmouth on Thursday.
"We didn't get the bats going until late into the game. Maybe if we had hit earlier it might have been a different game," said UMass Dartmouth head coach Bob Curran.
JWU jumped out to an early 4-0 lead with four runs on four hits plus a Corsair error and wild pitch in the second inning. The Wildcats added a single run in the fourth and a pair in the fifth before the Corsairs posted a single run in the bottom of the fifth.
UMass Dartmouth's comeback started in the bottom of the eighth with a walk by Rob Lomuscio. David Ogorzalek's single moved Lomuscio to second and Dan Mancini reached on an error to load the bases. A wild pitch scored Lomuscio and Ogorzalek scored on Dylan Zygmont's fielder's choice. Mancini scored on a wild pitch to clear the bases. Pinch hitter Will Mahoney walked then stole second and scored on Dave McGuire's single for the fourth run of the inning. But the Corsairs' couldn't get any more base runners but trailed by only two runs, 7-5.
JWU extended its lead in the ninth with a run to make it 8-5 to give the victory to starting pitcher Bobby Gilbert (2-1). Jeff Stewart came on in the ninth and picked up his third save of the season for the Wildcats. Shaun McAuliffe (0-2) was the starter and loser for the Corsairs.
UMass Dartmouth's top hitter was Lomuscio, who was 2-3 with a pair of walks, while Ogorzalek and McGuire each added a pair of hits. John Fidalgo led the way for JWU, going 3-5 with three runs batted in. Frank Nadjavestky had the game's only home run as part of a 3-5 day and Alex Hurley was 2-5.
UMass Dartmouth will be back in action when the Corsairs host Babson College in a non-coference game on Friday at 3:30 pm
