NORTH DARTMOUTH, MA-Babson broke open a close game with six runs in the final three innings and defeated the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth's baseball team, 7-2, in a non-conference game at the UMass Dartmouth Athletic Complex Friday afternoon.
The Corsairs, who had tied the game in the third inning, took the lead in the bottom of the fifth after loading the bases with two out. Junior left fielder Rob LoMuscio (West Roxbury, MA/Catholic Memorial HS) struck out, but reached first base on a wild pitch by starting pitcher Jeff Musante. Freshman shortstop Dave Ogorzalek (Rockfall, CT/Xavier HS) scored from third base to give UMass Dartmouth a 2-1 lead.
UMD tied it with one out in the third on back-to-back hits. Senior first baseman Dan Mancini (Marlboro, MA/Marlboro HS) doubled and scored on a single by sophomore right fielder Dylan Zygmont (Swansea, MA/Case HS). Billy Schmitt's sacrifice fly had given Babson a 1-0 lead in the top of the second inning.
The Beavers took the lead for good in the seventh. Ted Dziuba doubled and scored on an error by freshman third baseman Dave McGuire (Plainville, MA/King Philip Regional HS). Andrew Collins and Billy Lucas followed with singles, with Lucas' hit driving in the go-ahead run.
Babson added three runs in the eighth. Matt Delaney's sacrifice fly made it 4-2, a wild pitch by freshman relief pitcher Matt Kurth (Chilmark, MA/Martha's Vineyard HS) allowed a fifth run to score, and Jeff Wojnar's RBI single plated the sixth. Delaney drove in another run with a single in the ninth.
The Corsairs got 15 hits against Musante and reliever Brett Best, but left 14 men on base. Senior lefthander Parker Harrington (Weymouth, MA/Weymouth HS) pitched into the eighth inning, allowing five runs and eight hits.
"We didn't hit with runners in scoring position," said UMass Dartmouth Head Coach Bob Curran. "We had 15 hits and only one RBI. We left too many runners on base. Parker pitched a good game, but his pitch count got up and I had to take him out."
Musante earned the victory and improved his record to 1-1, while Best earned his first save of the season. Harrington took the loss and dropped to 0-3.
UMass Dartmouth fell to 5-16 with the defeat, while Babson improved to 12-12. Both teams will play conference doubleheaders Saturday. The Corsairs will visit Keene State for a Little East Conference twin bill, while The Corsairs will return to action when they host Johnson & Wales in a non-conference game Thursday afternoon, while Babson will host Springfield in a NEWMAC doubleheader.
