WALTHAM, MA-Brandeis broke an 8-all tie with three runs in the bottom of the eighth inning and defeated the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth's baseball team, 11-8, at Stein Field Monday afternoon.
The Judges loaded the bases with one out on a single and two walks, and then took the lead when losing pitcher Stephen Watson (Fr. Haverhill, MA/Haverhill HS) hit Ben Dashefsky with the bases loaded. Freshman Matt Kurth (Chilmark, MA/Martha's Vineyard HS) relieved. A wild pitch scored one run, and Mike Alfego's sacrifice fly scored another.
The Corsairs battled back from an early 6-1 deficit. Run-scoring singles by junior designated hitter Will Mahoney (Mattapoisett, MA/Old Rochester Regional HS), freshman shortstop Dave Ogorzalek (Rockfall, CT/Xavier HS) and senior first baseman Dan Mancini (Marlboro, MA/Marlboro HS) accounted for three runs in the top of the fifth inning. Freshman second baseman Peter Gomez (Bridgewater, MA/Bridgewater-Raynham HS) and freshman center fielder Sean Smolinsky (Hull, MA/Hull HS) each drove in runs in a three-run sixth that put UMass Dartmouth on top, 7-6. A run-scoring double by junior left fielder Rob LoMuscio (West Roxbury, MA/Catholic Memorial HS) in the second accounted for the Corsairs' first run of the game, and LoMuscio's RBI single in the top of the seventh tied the game at 8 and set the stage for Brandeis' eighth-inning rally.
Mancini finished with four hits for UMass Dartmouth, and LoMuscio had three. Jon Winston had two home runs and four runs batted in for the Judges, while Dashefsky, Alfego and Jeff Bourdon each drove in a pair of runs.
Tim Dunphy, the fifth Brandeis pitcher, earned the victory by pitching two shutout innings. He improved to 7-2. Watson took the loss and dropped to 0-1.
UMass Dartmouth fell to 5-19 with the defeat, while Brandeis improved to 15-8-1 with the victory. The Corsairs will return to action when they host Tufts in a non-conference game Tuesday afternoon.
