BRIDGEWATER, MA-Freshman shortstop Dave Ogorzalek (Rockfall, CT/Xavier HS) drove in the tie-breaking run in the fifth inning and senior reliever Eric Griswold (Taunton, MA/Taunton HS) worked out of trouble in the eighth as the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth's baseball team defeated host Bridgewater State, 7-6, in a non-conference game at Alumni Field Thursday afternoon.
Ogorzalek's sacrifice fly in the fifth scored junior outfielder Will Mahoney (Mattapoisett, MA/Old Rochester HS), who had singled and subsequently advanced to third. Ogorzalek's two-run double in the seventh drove in two more runs and allowed the Corsairs to increase their lead to 7-4.
Griswold entered the game in the eighth and worked out of a jam, getting the last out after the Bears had scored twice to cut UMD's lead to 7-6. BSC had a runner at first and two out in the ninth, when UMass Dartmouth sophomore right fielder Kevin Narey (Lynn, MA/Lynn Classical HS) made a diving catch to end the game.
"It was just like Adam Stern's diving catch (that ended a recent Boston Red Sox game)," said UMass Dartmouth Head Coach Bob Curran. "If he doesn't come up with the ball, we're still playing."
The Corsairs jumped out in front early, taking a 4-0 lead before Bridgewater battled back to tie the game. Sophomore outfielder Dylan Zygmont (Swansea, MA/Case HS) opened the scoring with a two-run double in the first, and Mahoney drove in two more runs with a single in the second.
Sophomore Brian Vanasse (Sterling, MA/Wachusett HS), who came in relief in the third inning and lasted through the end of the sixth, earned the victory, his first of the season against three losses. Griswold picked up his second save.
"It was great, I was very pleased with the way we played," said Curran. "We're playing better than we were earlier in the season. We're going to get ready for Saturday and see what we can do."
UMass Dartmouth improved to 7-22 with the victory, while Bridgewater State fell to 17-17 with the defeat. The Corsairs will return to action when they visit Western Connecticut State in a Little East Conference doubleheader Saturday.
