DANBURY, CT-The University of Massachusetts Dartmouth's baseball team's two-headed monster was a bit too much for Western Connecticut State in their Little East Conference doubleheader at Westside Field Saturday afternoon.
Junior lefthander Will Mahoney (Mattapoisett, MA/Old Rochester HS) and senior right-hander Lee Marques (Fall River, MA/Diman Regional HS) pitched back-to-back complete games and the Corsairs swept the twin bill, 10-2 and 9-1.
Mahoney scattered seven hits, walked two and struck out seven in the opener. Senior first baseman Dan Mancini (Marlboro, MA/ Marlboro HS) put the Corsairs on top on the opener with a first-inning RBI single, then doubled with the bases loaded in the ninth to drive home three insurance runs. UMass Dartmouth put the game away with a six-run seventh that included run-scoring hits by senior designated hitter Eric Griswold (Taunton, MA/Taunton HS), freshman second baseman Peter Gomez (Bridgewater, MA/Bridgewater-Raynham HS) and freshman center fielder Sean Smolinsky (Hull, MA/Hull HS) and a bases-loaded walk to junior catcher Mike Maclean (Spencer, MA/David Prouty HS).
Mahoney earned the win and improved to 4-3. Brian Krost, the first of four WCSU pitchers, lost and fell to 1-4.
Marques limited the Colonials to seven hits in the nightcap, walking four and striking out nine. Adam Kaplan's second-inning RBI single deprived him of a shutout.
While Marques handled the pitching, Mahoney handled a great deal of the hitting, with a double and two triples in five at-bats. He tripled and scored in the top of the first, and tripled and scored on Mancini's RBI single to spark a four-run rally in the sixth. Griswold's infield out and a sacrifice fly by freshman shortstop Dave Ogorzalek (Rockfall, CT/Xavier HS) accounted for two runs in the third and freshman third baseman Chris Riccio (Franklin, MA/Franklin HS) drove in a pair of runs in the fifth. Ogorzalek's RBI single and a two-run double by junior left fielder Rob LoMuscio (West Roxbury, MA/Catholic Memorial HS) accounted for three more runs in the sixth.
Marques earned the win and improved to 1-3, while WCSU starter Zane Honious took the loss and fell to 2-4.
"Will and Lee both pitched very well," said UMass Dartmouth Head Coach Bob Curran. "Will pitched a complete game and had two triples and a double in the second game, and Lee also went all the way. We played very well, we're finally coming around, and it looks like we're finally playing with some confidence."
UMass Dartmouth improved to 9-22 and 5-7 in the Little East Conference with the sweep, while WCSU fell to 10-24 and 3-8. The Corsairs will return to action when they visit Wheaton Tuesday.
