EAST PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- Johnson & Wales posted a 7- 2 victory against the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth's baseball team in a non-conference contest at Pierce Field on Thursday afternoon.
UMass Dartmouth took an early lead when a sacrifice fly by senior first baseman Dan Mancini (Marlboro, MA/Marlboro HS.) gave the Corsairs a 1-0 lead in the top of the first. An RBI single by senior designated hitter Eric Griswold (Taunton, MA/Taunton HS) in the top of the eighth accounted for the Corsairs' other run.
Johnson & Wales tied the score in the bottom of the second when an RBI single by sophomore Mike Mackay (Pawtucket, R.I.) scored Matt Bredes to knot the score at 1-1. In the bottom of the third, Jeff Stewart scored on a single to right by John Fidalgo and the Wildcats took a 3-1 lead on an RBI groundout by winning pitcher Dan Gilbert. JWU added two more in the bottom of the fourth, including a sacrifice fly by Stewart to take the 5-1 advantage. The Wildcats increased their advantage to 7-1 in the bottom of the seventh on an RBI single by Justin Talbott.
