by Jim Mullins Assistant Director Sports Information For the seventh time in nine seasons, Coach Brian Baptiste's men's basketball team qualified for the NCAA Division III championship tournament. UMass Dartmouth again captured the Little East Conference crown with a 13-1 conference record and an overall mark of 22-6. Baptiste was named the Kodak New England Region Division III Coach of the Year for the third time in his career. The Corsair's roster was filled with outstanding players and none played better than juniors Stefan Pagios (Pawtucket, R.I.) and Aaron Lee (Middleboro). Pagios received several awards including Little East Conference (LEC) Player of the Year, ECAC First Team All-Star, LEC Tournament All-Star and National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) Second Team All-Star. In addition to controlling the tempo on offense as point guard, Pagios was also one of the Corsair's leading scorers with 18.7 points per game. He led the team in assists (151) and connected on 38% of his three-point attempts (48-127). Lee led UMass Dartmouth in scoring with a 20.3 points per game average. He also was the top rebounder (206, 7.36 per game), was second in assists (113), shot 52% from the floor and connected on 43% of his three pointers (87-200). Lee had his own collection of awards, including LEC First Team All-Star, LEC Tournament All-Star, NABC First Team All-Star, ECAC First Team All-Star, Bentley Tournament All-Star and Rose Hulman Tournament All-Star. Although Coach Cathy Houtman's basketball team finished with a 5-18 record, it didn't mean the Corsairs didn't have some excellent individual performances. For the season, senior Christine Sullivan (Somerville, MA) led the team in three categories including scoring (16.55 points per game), steals (80) and blocks (16), while senior Kim Ferdella (Rochdale, MA) handed out a team high 10.4 assists per game. Junior Christine Lentini (No. Easton, MA) was UMass Dartmouth's best rebounder with more than 8.5 rebounds per game. One of the season highlights for Coach Houtman's team was a 62-46 thrashing of Eastern Connecticut State University, which broke an eight-game losing streak. Tied 22-22 at halftime, UMass Dartmouth exploded in the second half, outscoring ECSU 40-24. Sullivan led was the game's high scorer with 18 and Lentini added 12 more. After posting a 2-11 record in the Little East Conference, UMass Dartmouth was eliminated from the LEC Tournament in the first round, losing 77-58 to Plymouth State College. Sullivan closed out an outstanding career at UMass Dartmouth with a team-high 17 points. The Corsair hockey team successfully defended their ECAC Central Division Title with a 13-1 league record but fell one game short of the ECAC North-Central-South championship. Coach John Rolli's team was seeded second in the tournament, defeating Framingham State 6-2 in the quarterfinals, before dropping a 2-1 decision to Assumption in the semi-finals. Sophomore Glen Martin (Westport, MA), the Corsair's leading goal-scorer (22 goals) had the lone UMass Dartmouth score, while junior Kevin Kelly (Braintree, MA) registered 40 saves. One of the keys to UMass Dartmouth's success was the play of Kelly. In 17 games, Kelly posted a 13-3-1 record with a goals against average of 2.51 and a save percentage of over 90%. He was named ECAC Player of the Year and won a spot on the New England Hockey Writer's All-Star squad along with teammate sophomore P.J. Schneider (Plymouth, MA) (19 goals, 27 assists for 46 points). Senior Chris Laighton (Boxboro, MA) was the Corsair's top scorer with 20 goals, a team high 34 assists for 54 points. The 18-5-1 Corsairs were at their best beginning at midseason when they ran off 10 consecutive victories until the season-ending loss. Junior Kirsten Watters (Topsfield, MA) became the Corsairs' seventh All-American swimmer with a fifth place finish (1:55.11) in the 200-yard freestyle held at the NCAA Division III Nationals hosted by Williams College. In the same meet, Watters also placed ninth in the 500 yard freestyle (5:07.99) for honorable mention All-American in the event. She also placed 27th in the 100 yard freestyle (54.7). Coach Jim Filippo's Corsairs qualified nine swimmers for the New England Intercollegiate Swimming and Diving Championships. All nine of the UMass Dartmouth swimmers scored points in their events. For the season, the Corsairs broke nine of 24 varsity records, with three of the marks falling at the New England championship meet. On the Corsairs' men's team, the top performance of the season was turned in by freshman Seth Levrance (Saratoga, N.Y), who placed fifth in the New England championship meet with a 52.47, .2 seconds off the national qualifying time. Team captain senior Steve Benjamin (Pawtucket, R.I.) qualified for the New England championship meet in three events, including the 50-, 100- and 200-yard breast stroke. Coach John Hird's men's and women's teams were very busy throughout the winter season. The winter season was a preview of the spring season for several Corsairs, who turned in excellent performances indoors. Sophomore Stephanie Anderson (Mattapoisett, MA) turned in two of the season's best efforts in multiple team meets at Smith College and repeating at the Coast Guard Academy. At the Smith College meet, Anderson was a double winner, taking the triple jump (33-7) and long jump (16-3 3/4). Anderson was a double winner again at the Coast Guard Academy meet, finishing first in the triple jump (32-10 1/4), first in the long jump (15-10 1/2) and second in the 55-meter run (7.9) to teammate Jean Lincoln (Taunton, MA). The senior Corsair sprinter took first at that meet with a 7.6 (having already qualified for the New England Championship meet at 7.63 earlier in the season) and was runnerup in the 200-meters (30:36.). The Corsairs' men's team had an equal number of impressive individual performances during the winter season. At the men's meet at the Coast Guard Academy, two UMass Dartmouth athletes posted times qualifying for the New England championships. Freshman Sean Schofield (Glastonbury, Conn.) finished first in the high jump with a leap of 6-3 and sophomore Isaac Rodriguez (New Bedford, MA) took second in the 55-meter run. Earlier in the season at a six-team meet at M.I.T, Rodriguez placed second in the 55-meter run with a time of 8.03 and was part of the Corsair's' 1600 meter relay team which finished third (3:41.75). |
