Coach Bill Kavanaugh's Corsairs capped their second consecutive winning season with a come-from-behind victory against Bridgewater State College, 17-10. In earning UMass Dartmouth's second victory ever over BSC, the Corsairs rallied for 17 unanswered points in the second half, including a pair of touchdowns by sophomore quarterback William Casey (N. Easton, MA).

UMass Dartmouth finished the season with a 5-4 record. The Corsairs were led by co-captain senior Billy Johnson, who led the team in rushing (721 yards, 171 carries) and was second in scoring (6 TD's). One of the keys to the season was the continued development of Casey, who was second in rushing (560 yards, 159 carries), threw for 584 yards (50-137, 4 TD's and 7 INT's) and was the Corsairs' top scorer with 9 TD's for 54 points. On defense, senior linebacker Nassar Shabo (Worcester, MA), was the leading tackler with 72 tackles, an average of 8 per game. Senior safety Steve Roberge (Dartmouth, MA) topped all UMD defensive backs with 5 interceptions.

Men's Cross CountryWomen's Cross Country

With junior Deon Barrett ( New Bedford, MA) putting together an outstanding individual season, Coach Jon Hird's men's cross country team posted several strong outings during the Fall, highlighted by the Little East Conference championship. Barrett set the pace by taking the individual race with a time of 26:47 as the Corsairs won the title with 31 points, 14 better than Eastern Connecticut. The Corsairs closed out their season with a 12th-place performance in the NCAA Division III Championships hosted at the UMass Dartmouth campus.

On the women's side, sophomore Michelle Doane (Wrentham, MA) competed individually in several events, including a sixth place finish in the Little East Conference championship with a time of 22:08. Doane also competed in the NCAA Regional Division III Championships at UMass Dartmouth, placing 121st with a time of 20:58.

Women's Volleyball

A young Corsair volleyball team posted an 11-23 record during a season filled with injuries. The efforts of seniors Vicki Philibert (Swansea, MA) and Paula Forte (Bradford, MA) kept Coach Ken Duarte's team competitive throughout the difficult season. The bright note for UMass Dartmouth were the contributions of several underclassmen who new volleyball coach Stephanie Ponte can count on in 1994. Sophomore Cheryl Digits (N. Dighton, MA), Sarah Drewicz (Cambridge, MA) and freshman Heather Smolinski (Marion, MA) each saw plenty of action and will bolster Ponte's team during her rookie season.

Long before the injury bug hit the Corsairs, they enjoyed their season highlight by topping a field of five squads at the Atlantic Union Tournament in South Lancaster, MA. The Corsairs swept four straight, beating Emmanual, Thomas College, Green Mountain College and host Atlantic Union for the title. Philibert finished the tourney with 30 assists and 10 kills while sophomore Nadine Marrier (Arlington, MA) was 50-of-55 from the service line with 10 aces.

Men's Soccer

Coach Jarek Mlodzinski's squad posted an 11-7 record for the 1994 season. The Corsairs were led by junior Manosinh Strenuangan (Bridgeport, CT), who scored 15 goals with three assists for 33 points and junior Adelino Jacob (Fall River, MA), who finished the season with 11 goals and nine assists for 31 points. UMass Dartmouth's defense was keyed by sophomore goalie Bryan Guimar (Fall River, MA), who played in all 18 games for the Corsairs, posted three shutouts and compiled a 1.49 goals against average.

In January, Jim Cook was hired as the Corsairs' new head coach. Cook was head soccer coach at Roger Williams for the last four seasons and was inducted into the Rhode Island Soccer Coaches Hall of Fame in 1989 after several outstanding years coaching at Tiverton (R.I.) High School.

Women's Soccer

Although their season ended with a 2-0 loss to the University of Rochester in the NCAA Division III New England Regional Tournament held at Plymouth State College, Coach Ray Cabral's women's soccer team put together another outstanding campaign with a 12-2-3 record. After earning their second straight invitation to the NCAA Division III tournament, the Corsairs saw their 12-game unbeaten streak broken one game away from a return to the NCAA Division III finals. In the Little East Conference, UMass Dartmouth shared the title with Plymouth State College with identical 2-0-1 records.

The Corsairs possessed a balanced attack with five players scoring at least five goals. The team's leading scorer was freshman Jill Canelli (Norfolk, MA) who had 8 goals along with 2 assists for 18 points. Junior Heather Egan (Orleans, MA) and senior Leanne Morris (Salem, MA) were tied with five goals and two assists for 12 points each. A pair of sophomores, Melissa Mandracchi (Winchester, MA) and Kim Serracchia (Wakefield, MA) tied for third in scoring with 5 goals and an assist for 11 points each. Sophomore Rachel Barbarossa proved to be an outstanding goalie, posting an 11-2-3 record with 7.5 shutouts and a .79 goals against average.

Field Hockey

Coach Marilyn Ritz's Corsairs finished their season with a record of 4-10-2. Despite the losing record, UMass Dartmouth received a boost from the play of goalie Jennifer Connery. The sophomore from Leicester, MA played in all 16 games and allowed only 20 goals, for a goals against average of 1.15 including five shut outs. A pair of seniors were the leading scorers for UMass Dartmouth including Michelle Sullivan (Canton, MA), who netted four goals for eight points and Sherry Flanagan (So. Dartmouth, MA), who added three goals for six points.

Men's Golf

The Corsair's golf team enjoyed a busy fall schedule, posting a 2-0 record in matches and several strong appearances in invitational tournaments. Coach David Silva's team captured its own tournament the UMass Dartmouth Invitational for the first time in history. With a team score of 336, the Corsairs were led by sophomore Sean Collins (So. Dartmouth, MA) who fired the day's best score, a four-over par round of 76.

Women's Tennis

With a lineup consisting almost entirely of underclasswomen, Coach Warren Preti's tennis team compiled a 9-3 record. The Corsairs ran off a streak of three straight to open the season and closed with another three-game winning streak. Posting the top record for the season was freshman Emily Traubel (No. Dartmouth), who had a 9-3 mark. Following closely behind Traubel was sophomore Kristen Olmstead (Walpole, MA) who was 7-4 and sophomore Lisa Norman (Swansea, MA), who had a 6-1 record. Junior Christen Moak (Newburyport, MA), the Corsairs lone upperclasswoman, had a record of 6-3 and sophomore Michelle Collins (Millis, MA) was 5-2 on the season.
