1994 Fall Season Review

Men's Cross CountryWomen's Cross Country

Senior Deon Barrett (New Bedford, MA) earned NCAA Division III All America honors by finishing 24th at the Division III Cross Country National Championships held in Bethlehem, PA. Barrett also won the Little East Conference championship race for the third consecutive season. At the NCAA Division III Regional Championship race, the Corsairs' men finished sixth out of 32 teams and the women took 13th from a field of 30 teams.

Coach Jon Hird's Corsairs also won both Little East Conference championship races. For the men, it was their seventh consecutive title in seven years and the third in seven years for the women. Finishing in the top seven to earn All LEC honors were Barrett, Jeffrey Mahoney (Wrentham, MA), Thomas Steele (Weymouth, MA), Christopher Elgar (Seekonk, MA), Michael Paulin (Westfield, MA) and Geoff Kearton (Long Island, NY). In the women's race, Michelle Doane (Wrentham, MA) and Maureen McIsaac (Foxboro, MA) were LEC All Stars.


Field Hockey

Coming off a 4-10-2 season in 1993, Coach Marilyn Ritz's Corsairs were one of the biggest surprises of the fall, finishing with a 10-6-2 record. The Corsairs were rewarded with an invitation to the ECAC New England Division III Field Hockey Tournament. The Corsairs dropped a 1-0 decision to Tufts University in the tournament quarterfinals.

The Corsairs were led by Natalia Gioni (Dartmouth, MA), who was named to the Northeast Regional Division III Field Hockey Coaches' All America Second Team. Gioni led UMass Dartmouth in scoring with seven goals and an assist for 15 points. Dana Deegan (Bellingham, MA) added six goals for 12 points, while Maureen Maloney (Blackstone, MA) had three goals and five assists for 11 points. UMass Dartmouth got a big boost on defense from goalie Joyce Tamulevich (Brant Rock, MA), who had nine shutouts and a 0.58 goals against average.


Football

In only its seventh season as a varsity sport, the Corsairs captured their first championship and set a school record for wins in a season (8). In the ECAC North-West Championship Game against Union College, the Corsairs lost 34-14. UMass Dartmouth finished 8-3 and was co-champion of the New England Football Conference with Maine Maritime Academy.

UMass Dartmouth Coach Bill Kavanaugh was selected NEFC Coach of the Year and five offensive starters were selected to the NEFC First Team, including Bill Casey (N. Easton, MA), Paul Salsinha (Fall River, MA) (also ECAC Second Team All New England), Kevin Magnussen (Millis, MA), John Barbarossa (Billerica, MA) and Jim Santucci (Foxboro, MA). Casey (35-112 passing, 611 yards, 7 TDs) became the first player in school history to run for more than 1,000 yards in a season (1,032 yards, 9 TDs) and led the NEFC in total offense with an average of 164.3 yards per game. Fullback James Chase (W. Barnstable, MA) was the Corsairs' leading scorer with 10 TDs and 586 yards on 121 carries. Defensively, the Corsairs were led by NEFC First Team selection, Paul Barnett (Wareham, MA) (4 Ints).


Men's Soccer

Led by Little East Conference Coach of the Year Jim Cook, the Corsairs finished with an 11-6 record and second in the LEC. In Cook's first season at UMass Dartmouth, the Corsairs started with a 5-6 record through the first half of the season. But the Corsairs finished on a roll, winning eight of their last 10 games, including the last six in a row.

Senior tri-captain Adelino Jacob (Fall River, MA) (9 goals, 3 assists) and Manosinh Srenuanjan (Bridgeport, CT) (8 goals, 5 assists) were the Corsairs� leading scorers with 21 points each. Marco Montez (New Bedford, MA) (4-4, 12 points) and Erik Reis (Westport, MA) (5-2, 12 points) were the Corsairs' other top scorers. Jacob was a New England Intercollegiate Division III All Star, LEC All Star and Third Team Division III All New England. Tony Capela (Stoughton, MA) was an LEC All Star and Dan Sousa (Fall River, MA) was an LEC Honorable Mention.


Women's Soccer

For a third consecutive season, the Corsairs (ranked 4th in the New England Region) were selected to the NCAA Division III women's soccer tournament. UMass Dartmouth finished 14-4 overall and tied for second in the Little East Conference (2-2). In the NCAA Division III tournament, the Corsairs lost a heartbreaking 4-2 overtime decision to Amherst College.

Senior Annmarie Gagnon (Beverly, MA) became the first player in LEC history to be named All LEC for four consecutive seasons. Senior goalie Rachael Barbarossa (Billerica, MA) was selected for a second time to the LEC All Stars and was a First Team New England Women's Intercollegiate Soccer Association Senior All New England and Division III Second Team All America and All New England selection. Barbarossa was 12-4 in goal, with 11 shutouts and a 0.51 goals against average. Beth Kelly (Wakefield, RI) was an NEWISA Senior All New England Second Team selection and Kim Serrecchia (Wakefield, MA) was an LEC All Star. Melissa Mandracchia (Winchester, MA) (9-4, 22 points) was UMass Dartmouth's top scorer, followed by Jill Canelli (Norfolk, MA) (7-2, 16 points) and Jen Scala (E. Falmouth, MA) (6-0, 12 points).


Women's Tennis

Coach Warren Preti's tennis team won five of their last seven matches to close with a 10-5 record. At the Little East Conference Championships, the Corsairs finished second with four players earning All LEC honors. The Corsairs' all stars were Emily Traubel (Pennington, NJ), Kristen Moak (Newburyport, MA), Tammy Drew (Pembroke, MA) and Lisa Norman (Swansea, MA).

In overall singles' competition, Traubel led the Corsairs with a 10-5 record followed by Drew (9-4) and Moak (8-2). In doubles� play, UMass Dartmouth�s best combination was Drew and Norman (6-1), followed by Kirsten Olmstead (Walpole, MA) and Amy Kennedy (Danvers, MA) (5-5). UMass Dartmouth had a 54-33 record in singles and 23-19 in doubles.


Women's Volleyball

Behind by first-year coach Stephanie Ponte, the Corsairs closed out the season with a 19-18 record. After a slow start, UMass Dartmouth finished strong, winning five of their last six and seven of their last 11 matches. In addition to a busy regular season schedule, UMass Dartmouth had several strong tournament showings, including second place at Atlantic Union, third in the LEC, tied for third at Salem State and fifth place ties at UMass Dartmouth�s Invitational and the Hall of Fame Induction Tournament.

Cheryl Digits (N. Dighton, MA) was one of the Corsairs' top performers throughout the season, earning All Tournament Honors at the UMass Dartmouth Invitational. At the Atlantic Union Tournament, Nadine Marrier (Arlington, MA) registered 24 kills, while Heather Smolinsky (Marion, MA) had nine kills and 12 blocks.


Men's Golf

Don Daley took over the UMass Dartmouth golf program for the Fall 1994 season. The Corsairs finished second at the UMass Dartmouth Invitational to Rhode Island College. At the New England Intercollegiate Golf Championship, UMass Dartmouth placed 34th, and 10th among the 19 Division III teams. The Corsairs were led by Joe Johnson (Stoughton, MA) (84-83, 167), Gerry Santos (Westport, MA) (90-79, 169), Dan Scully (E. Taunton, MA) (89-84, 173) and Mike Santoro (Quincy, MA) (91-88, 179).
