1994 Spring Season Review

by Jim Mullins Assistant Director Sports Information For the fourth consecutive season, Coach Bruce Wheeler's Corsairs qualified for the Division III NCAA New England Regional Tournament. The fourth-seeded Corsairs placed third in the Regional and finished the season with a 26-10 record, ranked 20th in NCAA Division III poll and second in the New England Division III poll. Pitching was UMass Dartmouth's strength with three Corsairs receiving post season honors. Fred Conley (Brockton, MA) (5-3, 2.77) was named to the Division III All New England All-Star team and will pitch in the annual Coaches All-Star Game at Fenway Park, June 6. Aaron Perron (Acushnet, MA) (8-2, 2.43) and Derek Duclos (New Bedford, MA) (5-1, 2.27 and 9 saves) were both named to the Division III All New England second team. Duclos' nine saves led all Division III pitchers in the country. Coach Marilyn Ritz's team posted a 24-6 record and captured the ECAC Division III North championship for the second time in three seasons. Shelly Albanese's (Westport, MA) two-out single in the bottom of the eighth inning scored Jen Raffa (Bedford, MA) from third base to give the Corsairs a 3-2 victory over North Adams for the title. The Corsairs were led by Kelly Roy (Swansea, MA), who was named to the ECAC All New England All-Star team. During the regular season, Roy was 51-98 for a .520 batting average and 29 RBI. In the five-game ECAC tournament, Roy had 11 hits in 17 at bats with 5 RBI. Lorraine Rooney (Middleboro, MA) (.407, 18 RBI) and Jennifer Pfister (Lakeville, MA) were named to the ECAC All New England second team. In addition to being named ECAC Tournament MVP, Pfister had a 19-5 record and an ERA of 1.94 ERA. She also batted .457 and led the Corsairs with 45 RBI. The Corsairs closed out their season with three consecutive victories to finish with a 7-4 record. Coach Warren Preti's team placed second in the Little East Conference championship match with two players winning LEC titles. Filipe Miguel (Brockton, MA) captured the LEC championship at first singles and also received the LEC Sportsmanship Award. The team of Eric Page (Newburyport, MA) and Ryan Todd (Wrentham, MA) captured the LEC championship at second doubles. Coach Jon Hird's athletes turned in an excellent season with one athlete qualifying for the NCAA Division III championship meet and 14 competing in the New England Division III championship meet. Jean Lincoln represented UMass Dartmouth at the NCAA Division III championships held at North Central College in Illinois. Lincoln qualified for the national championship meet with a 12.31 in the 100 meter dash, the third best time of the season in Division III. Lincoln finished 10th in the qualifying round in Illinois. Lincoln also finished second in the New England Division III meet with a time of 12.79. Isaac Rodriguez qualified for the All New England Meet and took 7th in the 110-meter hurdles. He finished fourth in the New England Division III meet. Also competing in the New England Division III meet were Deon Barrett, who finished second in the 5,000 meters and P.J. Cady (Dedham, MA) who took third in the long jump. The UMass Dartmouth golf team competed in several events this spring including a 10th place finish in the Massachusetts Open with Gerry Santos (Westport, MA) carding the low round of 80. Coach David Silva's team also hosted the UMass Dartmouth Invitational at New Bedford Country Club and finished fifth. |
