More than one of four Corsair student-athletes earn academic honors during Spring 2004 semester
(Dartmouth, MA) – Each semester during the school year, the UMass Dartmouth Department of Athletics announces its list of academic achievements by the top student-athletes on campus. As an NCAA Division III institution, UMass Dartmouth places the highest priority on the student-athlete model where academics are the top priority followed by athletic participation and other campus activities.
One hundred twenty-five UMass Dartmouth student-athletes from 23 different teams earned academic distinction during the Spring 2004 semester. Of the students who received honors, 24 were named to the Chancellor's List with a grade point average of at least 3.8 (on a scale of 4.0), while the remaining 101 students were named to the Dean's List with a GPA of at least 3.2 or better.
The 125 student-athletes who earned academic honors represent 26.2% of the 475 student-athletes who competed for 26 varsity sports teams last season. The Athletic Department is very proud that more than one out of four student-athletes has achieved such distinction in the classroom, while also balancing a full-time commitment to their sport.
Of the 125 academic award winners (69 women, 56 men), the Corsairs' football team had 17 players earn academic honors, while the UMass Dartmouth field hockey team had 11 and the women’s soccer team had 10.
Based on the percentage of student-athletes on a team earning academic honors, the women’s basketball team leads the list with nine of 14 players earning honors for 64.2%. The women’s cross country team had the second highest percentage with seven award winners out of 11 on the roster with field hockey third (11 of 22, 50%) and women’s soccer fourth (10 of 21, 47.6%).
The UMass Dartmouth Department of Athletics views academic achievement as the highest priority for each and every student-athlete. In order to achieve the combined goal of being a successful student-athlete, the Athletic Department is proud to have developed solid working relationships between faculty, staff and coaches.
