UMass Dartmouth closes with
24-14 win over BridgewaterCoach Bill Kavanaugh's Corsairs closed out the season with their eighth consecutive victory, a 24-14 New England Football Conference (NEFC) win at Bridgewater State College. The victory tied the school record of 8 wins in a season (set in '94) and left the Corsairs 8-2 overall, ranked #7 in the ECAC New England Division III poll. UMass Dartmouth finished second in the NEFC at 7-1 behind two-time champion Worcester State (10-0).
UMass Dartmouth raced out to a 14-0 first quarter lead on a pair of 1-yard TD runs by Mike Masse (Wareham, MA) and Jay Furtado (Swansea, MA). Paul Barnett (Wareham, MA) extended the Corsairs lead to 21-0 with a 1-yard TD with 9:30 left in the third quarter. Bridgewater State cut the Corsairs' lead to 21-14 before John Barbarossa (Billerica, MA) put the game out of reach with a 26-yard field goal with 6:12 to play.
Interceptions by Jon Lydon (Weymouth, MA) and NEFC Co-Defensive Player of the Week Rob Carney (Leicester, MA) shut down the Bears' comeback attempts. Carney was recognized by the NEFC and the ECAC New England Defensive Player of the Week for making 8 tackles (5 solos), an interception, a sack and a broken up pass. Barbarossa, Carney, Mike Fitzgerald (Everett, MA) and John Skabeikis (Dorchester, MA) each came up with 8 tackles.
Furtado earned NEFC Offensive Honor Roll and ECAC Weekly Honor Roll distinction for completing 8 of 18 passes for 179 yards and adding 25 yards rushing plus a TD. Filling in for the injured Jo Jo Goodine (New Bedford, MA), Masse picked up 68 yards on 24 carries and a TD. James Kelley (Marshfield, MA) was Furtado's favorite target with 3 receptions for 64 yards and Barbarossa grabbed 2 passes for 40 yards.
11-1 win over Curry College
give Corsairs 3-0 recordFirst period goals by Steve Bartkus (Quincy, MA) and Marc Salvi (Cheshire, MA) gave the Corsairs a 2-0 first period lead and they never looked back in an 11-1 non-conference game last Saturday at Curry College. The victory improves UMass Dartmouth's record to 3-0.
The Corsairs exploded for four more unanswered goals in the second period and added five more in the third period for an 11-0 lead before Curry College broke the shutout with 3:43 to play. Goalie Ryan Sloper (Billerica, MA) stopped 11 shots in net to pick up his first victory of the season.
Leading the Corsairs' offensive attack were Bartkus (2 goals), Mike Doherty (Stoneham, MA) (2 goals, 2 assists), Jason Kotack (Toronto, Ontario) (1 goal, 3 assists), Salvi (1 goal, 3 assists) and Jarrod DiBona (Weymouth, MA) (1 goal, 2 assists).
Through 3 games this season, Jarrod DiBona is UMass Dartmouth's leading scorer (7-6-13) followed by Salvi (3-7-10) and Bartkus (3-3-6).

UMass Dartmouth Sports Notes
Maureen Maloney (Blackstone, MA) was named to the 1996 National Field Hockey Coaches Association Division III All America Northeast Region Second Team. A junior forward this season, Maloney finished second in scoring for the Corsairs with 7 goals and 5 assists for 19 points in 17 games......The winter sports season gets into full swing next Tuesday night, November 26 when UMass Dartmouth hosts Worcester State in a men's and women's basketball doubleheader at the Tripp Center. The Corsairs' women will take the court at 6 p.m. in the opener and the men' game will play the nightcap following the women's game......While the UMass Dartmouth women's swimming and diving team opens its season at home Wednesday night by hosting Regis College, the men's team won't begin its season until traveling to Bridgewater State with the women's team on Tuesday, November 26......Men's and women's indoor track won't open its season until after the Thanksgiving Day holiday break. Both Corsair teams will travel to Brown University on Saturday, December 7 to open their respective season.
