Corsairs seeded 6th in ECAC tourney, open with Conn. College The UMass Dartmouth field hockey team will get a second chance at Connecticut College when the two teams meet in the first round of the 1996 ECAC Division III Field Hockey Tournament which gets underway this week.
The sixth-seeded Corsairs (13-3), who tied a school record for victories, will travel to New London, CT. for a first round game against third-seeded Connecticut College (10-4) on Nov. 6. The first round game pitting the Corsairs, ranked #9 in the most recent NCAA Division III Northeast Region poll, against Connecticut College, ranked #8 in the same poll, will be played almost two weeks after these two teams faced each other on October 24. In that game played in New London, CT, the Camels shutout UMass Dartmouth, 2-0.
The Corsairs wrapped up their regular season last week with a 4-0 victory over Stonehill College before falling 2-0 in their final game against Division II Assumption College. In the victory over Stonehill College, Ashley Dorman (Harwich, MA) and Maureen Zukowski (Dartmouth, MA) scored first-half goals. Becky Chase (Westport, MA) and Heleen Vos (Bloemendal, Netherlands) scored the second-half goals. Audrey Sanford (Tiverton, RI) did not have to make a save in picking up her 12th victory and 6th shutout of the season. In the season finale against Assumption College, Sanford made 12 saves in a losing effort.
Vos finished the season as UMass Dartmouth's top scorer with 11 goals and 6 assists for 28 points followed by Maureen Maloney (Blackstone, MA) (7-4-18) and Dorman (6-2-14). Sanford finished the season with a 12-3 record with a 0.90 goals against average.
Winners of first round games Nov. 6 advance to the semi-final and final round games to be played Nov. 9-10 at a site to be determined.
Weimann makes 59 saves to lead
Corsairs to Pepsi Invitational winCaptain Marc Salvi's (Cheshire, MA) unassisted goal in the second period of overtime gave UMass Dartmouth a 2-1 victory over SUNY Potsdam and the 1996 Pepsi Invitational Tournament championship. Tournament MVP Louis Weimann (Burlington, VT) made an incredible 59 saves on 60 shots to lift the Corsairs to their second victory of the young season. In the tournament's semi-final against Plymouth State, Jarrod DiBona (Weymouth, MA) scored five goals to lead the Corsairs to a 7-2 victory. Weimann (15 saves) and Ryan Sloper (Billerica, MA) (4 saves) shared the duties in goal.
In the tournament championship game, Steve Bartkus (Quincy, MA) gave the Corsairs an early 1-0 lead with a goal assisted by Salvi and Jarrod DiBona. Potsdam State tied the game, 1-1, late in the second period. The teams were scoreless through the third period and the first overtime period before Salvi scored the unassisted game-winner. Against Plymouth State College the previous night, Jarrod DiBona netted five goals, including a natural hat trick in the third period. Salvi added the game's second goal on a feed from Jarrod DiBona and Mike Doherty (Stoneham, MA) scored what proved to be the game-winner with assists from Jason Kostack (Toronto, Ontario) and Jon Ruel (Mattapoisett, MA) midway through the opening period. DiBona scored once in the second period, assisted by Bartkus and Salvi as Plymouth State narrowed the Corsairs' lead to 4-2. DiBona scored three in a row with assists from Bartkus and Salvi on a pair of goals plus an unassisted effort for the 7-2 final.
In addition to being named the Tournament MVP, Weimann was named to the All-Tournament team in goal for stopping 74 of 77 shots in two games. DiBona (5-2-7) and Salvi (1-4-5) were named All Tournament at forward and Jason Cormier (Waltham, MA) was All Tournament on defense. Plymouth State defeated St. Michael's in the consolation game, 4-2.
Football
Corsairs make it 6 straight with 35-14 win over Framingham St. Coach Bill Kavanaugh's Corsairs extended their winning streak to 6 straight games with a 35-14 NEFC victory over Framingham State College. Ranked #8 in this week's ECAC Division III poll, UMass Dartmouth moved into second place in the NEFC with a 5-1 record. Worcester State clinched at least a tie for the NEFC title with a 41-23 win over Bridgewater State. The Corsairs have NEFC games remaining against Westfield State on November 9 and at Bridgewater State on November 16.
Scoreless after one period at Framingham State, UMass Dartmouth scored 4 times in the second quarter to take a 28-6 halftime lead. Quarterback Jay Furtado (Swansea, MA) scored on a 1-yard TD, James Kelley (Marshfield, MA) added a 1-yard score for a 14-0 lead before Kelley hauled in a 14-yard TD pass from Furtado for a 21-0 lead. Co-captain John Barbarossa (Billerica, MA) caught a 23-yard TD pass from Furtado right before half time, then added the fourth of five extra point conversions. Co-captain John Skabeikis (Dorchester, MA) returned an interception 28 yards in the fourth quarter for UMass Dartmouth's final TD.
Framingham State succeeded in stopping Jo Jo Goodine (New Bedford, MA), snapping his streak of 5 straight 100 yards games, but they couldn't stop Furtado. An NEFC and ECAC Honor Roll selection this week, Furtado connected on 15 of 29 passes for 243 yards and two TDs along with the one he scored. Jon Bishop (Haverhill, MA) was Furtado's top receiver, grabbing 9 passes for 131 yards along with Tyhon Pina (New Bedford, MA) (3-61). Linebacker Rob Carney (Leicester, MA) was named the the NEFC Defensive Honor Roll for making five tackles (2 solo) along with a pair of interceptions for 24 return yards.
Held to 44 yards on 22 carries by the Rams, Goodine was ranked 29th in all purpose yards among Division III players in the country last week. In 7 games, he's rushed for 742 yards for a 4.6 yard average with 7 TDs and an average of 106 yards per game. Furtado is 75 of 158 for 1,099 yards and 8 TDs. Carney leads the defense with 7.6 tackles per game followed by co-captain Matt DeGrandpre (Marion, MA) (5.3), Jay Kirby (New Bedford, MA) and Osvaldo Powell (Onset, MA), tied with 5.1 each.
Men's Soccer
Corsairs get first LEC win with 3-2 decision over Southern Maine UMass Dartmouth closed Little East Conference play last week with its first LEC victory of the season, a 3-2 victory over Southern Maine. Earlier in the week, the Corsairs put a scare into UMass Boston, but had to settle for a 1-1 LEC tie. Nelson Melo (Fall River, MA) was named to the LEC Honor Roll this week for a solid game against UMass Boston and a goal and assists in the win over the Huskies.
Trailing 1-0 late in the second half, Moses Isidoro (Westport, MA) forced the game into overtime with his fourth goal of the season. Isidoro's unassisted goal came with a minute remaining in regulation time. Neither team was able to score in two overtime periods for the 1-1 tie. Mike Ring (Peabody, MA) came up with 3 saves in goal. Against Southern Maine, Melo put UMass Dartmouth ahead at the 20:00 minute mark on his second goal of the season, with an assist to Erik Reis (Westport, MA). Tied 1-1 early in the second half, Paul Sousa (Bristol, RI) scored an unassisted goal, his second goal of the year, for a 2-1 UMass Dartmouth lead before Torey Terrasi (Easton, MA) scored the game-winner at the 62:00 minute mark. The goal, Terrasi's fifth of the year to lead the Corsairs in scoring, was assisted by Melo and Reis. Ring allowed a goal in the final minute but made two saves to pick up the victory. The Corsairs are 5-9-3 overall and finished 1-3-2 for 4th in the LEC.
Women's Soccer
Loss to Bowdoin drops Corsairs to 7-7-2 in Silva's first year Coach Alex Silva's Corsairs wrapped up their 1996 season with a 2-0 defeat at the hands of Bowdoin College. Scoreless through the first half, Bowdoin netted a pair of second half goals. Goalie Sue Constantine (New Bedford, MA) made 7 saves in a losing effort. The loss dropped UMass Dartmouth's overall record for the season to 7-7-2. In the LEC, the Corsairs finished 3-2-1, tied for third place with Southern Maine.
Michelle Cameron (North Reading, MA) finished the season as UMass Dartmouth's top scorer with 4 goals and 2 assists for 10 points, tied for 10th in the LEC. Jill Canelli (Norfolk, MA) was second (2-2-6) followed by Dora DiLeonado (Stanford, CT) (2-1-5) and Jill Toloczko (Rockland, MA) (2-1-5). In her first year in goal for the Corsairs, Constantine posted a 7-7-2 record in 16 games, with 104 saves and 5 shutouts. Her 1.05 goals against average ranked her fifth in the final LEC standings. She was the only Corsair named LEC Player of the Week, receiving the honor the week of Oct. 27.
Volleyball
Two more losses leave Corsairs winless heading into final week UMass Dartmouth was shut out twice last week, falling 15-11, 15-1 and 15-1 to Clark University and 15-6, 15-3 and 15-1 to Roger Williams University. The Corsairs (0-21) wrap up their season this week with home matches against Framingham State (Nov. 5), Stonehill College (Nov. 7) and a dual match with Assumption College and Eastern Nazarene (Nov. 9).

UMass Dartmouth Sports Notes:
The first of two "Skate With The Corsairs" will be held in conjunction with the Hetland Panther Youth Hockey Association on November 6 at Hetland Arena in New Bedford. Corsair players will conduct a clinic and practice four Hetland Panther Youth Hockey Mites and Squirts on Nov. 6 and follow with the Pee Wees and Bantams the following week, Nov. 13. Both sessions will be held from 5 p.m. to 6 p.m. On Wednesday, November 20, the Corsairs' home opener against Fitchburg State College, UMass Dartmouth will host Hetland Panthers Fan Appreciation Night at Hetland Arena. The rematch of last year's ECAC North/Central/South title game won by the Falcons 2-1 in overtime, is scheduled to start at 7:30 p.m......UMass Dartmouth will return to ice hockey action Saturday, November 16 with a game at Curry College......Tuesday, November 26 will be a busy day at UMass Dartmouth with three winter sports teams competing in their season openers. Both men's and women's basketball teams will open that night with home games against Worcester State College. The Corsairs' women's swimming team opens at home with a meet against Regis College. The men open the following night with a meet at Bridgewater State College along with the women's squad.
