by Jim Mullins Assistant Director Sports Information Coach Marilyn Ritz's Corsairs extended their winning streak to four straight with three more victories last week. UMass Dartmouth (5-2) also ran its consecutive shutout streak to three in a row before giving up a goal in the 2-1 OT win over Worcester Polytech. Since beating Worcester State, 1-0, on Sept. 20, the Corsairs have knocked off Framingham State (3-0), Clark University (1-0 in sudden death), plus the win over Worcester Polytech. Goalie Paula Malcom (Milford, MA) made only one save but picked up the shutout win over Framingham State. The victory was Malcom's third without a loss and lowered her goals against average to 0.38. Scoreless after the first half, Ashley Dorman's (Harwich, MA) unassisted goal early in the second half proved to be the game-winner. Kelly Place (Ashland, MA) made it 2-0 with an assist from Karen Hodgkins (Dartmouth, MA) and Maureen Zukowski's (Dartmouth, MA) unassisted goal rounded out the scoring. Dorman scored the game-winner in the Corsairs' 1-0 sudden death victory over Clark University. UMass Dartmouth was outshot by Clark, 26-19, but Becky Medeiros (Fall River, MA) came up with eight saves for the shutout victory. Dorman's game-winning goal was assisted by Zukowski at 12:35 of sudden death. UMass Dartmouth outshot WPI, 51-18, but could muster only a first-half goal by Zukowski with an assist from Place. WPI matched the Corsairs' goal about 10 minutes later for the 1-1 tie that sent the game to sudden death. Maureen Maloney (Blackstone, MA) sent the Corsairs home winners, connecting on a penalty shot at 13:30 of sudden death. The sudden death victory was UMass Dartmouth's second in as many seasons over WPI. Medeiros made two saves to pick up the win against WPI, extending her record to 2-2 with a 1.57 goals against average. UMass Dartmouth picked up a pair of victories over Regis College and Fitchburg State College last week with their lone defeat coming against undefeated Brandeis University. Coach Rick Quintin's team dropped a 3-0 decision against Brandeis, losing, 15-5, in the opener, 15-6, in the second game, before losing the match, 15-10, in the final set. Amy Wilson (Dartmouth, MA) had 12 kills and 18 digs, while Stephanie Wilson (Dartmouth, MA) added six kills. The Corsairs picked up their second victory of the season with a 3-1 victory over Regis College. UMass Dartmouth dropped the opening set, 15-8, but came back to sweep the next three games to take the match. The Corsairs evened the match at 1-1 with a 15-11 win in the second game, after trailing 11-6 at one point. The third game also went to the Corsairs, 17-15, before UMass Dartmouth put the win away with a 16-14 victory in the fourth and final set. Amy Wilson had six kills, while Cindy Brehaut (Dartmouth, MA) had 20 digs and eight kills. Jessica Daggett (Chelmsford, MA) had a great floor game for UMass Dartmouth with six kills and three blocks. UMass Dartmouth improved its record to 3-6 with a 3-0 sweep of Fitchburg State College. The Corsairs straight-set victory came from 15-7, 15-8 and 15-4 victories. Marci Lima (Dartmouth, MA) had seven digs and five kills to lead the Corsairs. Heather Louro (Dartmouth, MA) added 30 assists and 13 serving points. Amy Wilson chipped in 13 kills and Alicia Pegg (Westport, MA) had four kills in the first game. Four TD passes by Jay Furtado (Swansea, MA), including three in the first half, sparked the Corsairs to a 41-29 New England Football Conference victory over Massachusetts Maritime Academy (0-3, 0-1 NEFC). Playing at home for the first time this year, Coach Bill Kavanaugh's squad did not disappoint the fans, throwing for more 302 yards plus another 108 yards on the ground. UMass Dartmouth is 2-1 overall and 1-0 in the NEFC. Mike Masse (Wareham, MA) (14 carries, 66 yards) opened the scoring with a two-yard touchdown, followed by the first of five Eric Lundell (Mansfield, MA) conversions. Furtado threw the first of three touchdown passes to Sean McGlynn (Swansea, MA) early in the second quarter. McGlynn's nine-yard scoring pass from Furtado gave the Corsairs a 10-0 lead. After Mass. Maritime responded on the next drive with a score, McGlynn hauled in his second TD from Furtado with 7:47 to play in the first half. Ryan Bland (Dartmouth, MA) pulled in Furtado's third TD on a 16-yard scoring pass for a 27-6 lead. McGlynn's 25-yard TD catch from Furtado late in the third quarter gave the Corsairs a commanding 34-8 lead heading into the final quarter. Bland closed out the Corsairs' scoring by hauling in a 48-yard TD pass from Matt McLaughlin (Mansfield, MA). The Buccaneers added a pair of late touchdowns on the Corsairs' second team defense for the 41-29 final score. Furtado finished the game 13 for 19 with 219 yards and four TD passes, bringing his total to 10 in three games with only two interceptions. Bland grabbed seven passes for 164 yards and a TD, while McGlynn had five catches for 88 yards and three TDs. McGlynn leads the Corsairs in scoring with five TDs for 30 points. Bland has four TDs for 24 points and Lundell is 9-13 on extra point and one of two on field goals for 18 points. On defense, Rob Carney (Leicester, MA) leads the Corsairs with 22 tackles (14 primary) followed by Brandon Duarte (Wareham, MA) (20 tackles, 11 primary) and Dave Spiriti (Everett, MA) (18 tackles, five primary). Coach Warren Preti's team improved its overall record to 4-2 with two victories and a loss last week. The Corsairs opened the week with an 8-1 win over Roger Williams, before dropping a 7-2 decision to Connecticut College. UMass Dartmouth rebounded the next day with a 7-2 win over Western Connecticut State University. In the victory over RWU, UMass Dartmouth took five of the six singles matches and swept the doubles competition. Mary Bourque (Rochester, MA) brought home a 6-2, 6-1 win at #1 singles, while Kasha Gula (Mansfield, MA) and Kelly Berger (Buzzards Bay, MA) also had straight set wins at #2 and #3 singles respectively. Olivia Cunha (New Bedford, MA) was a 6-2, 6-0 winner at #5 singles and Christine Mace (Abington, MA) was a 6-1, 6-2 winner in #6 singles. The Corsairs #2 doubles team of Bourque and Thien-Nga Nguyen (Shrewsbury, MA) was an 8-4 winner. At #2 doubles, Cunha and Ashley Kennedy (Holliston, MA) teamed up for an 8-3 win and Cari Leslie (Glen Cove, NY) and Megan Harvey (Boxford, MA) took an 8-2 decision at #3 doubles. The Corsairs brought home only a pair of individual victories in the loss at Connecticut College. Berger at #2 singles was a 6-2, 6-1 winner and Stephanie Hauser (Germany) at #3 singles was a 6-1, 6-1 winner as well. After traveling to Connecticut College in New London, CT on Sept. 27, the Corsairs evened their record on the road trip, taking a 7-2 win over Western Connecticut in Danbury, CT. From a field of 16 teams at the Rhode Island College Invitational, Coach Jon Hird's Corsairs place sixth with 139 points. Southern Connecticut was the team winner with 57 points. Maura McDonald (Greenfield, MA) was UMass Dartmouth's top runner, taking 11th place overall with a time of 20:14. The Corsairs Jackie Gorski (Warwick, RI) and Tara Carson (Beverly, MA) were the next two runners to finish, taking 25th and 26th at 20:51 and 20:52 respectively. Mandy Cordeiro (Dartmouth, MA) took 36th place in 21:08. Among the other UMass Dartmouth runners who competed were Karla Jarquin (Shrewsbury, MA) (48th, 21:34), Melissa Ying (Andover, MA) 60th, 21:55) and Laura Caselden (Westfield, MA) (84th, 22:37). The Corsairs sent three runners to the Rhode Island College Invitational in Providence, R.I, and one of them, Gary Mello (Woburn, MA), almost came home with the winner's trophy. Mello had to settle for second place with a time of 26:58. Pierre Reyne (Fontbellon, France) took 25th place overall with a time of 29:34 and Jeff Reed (Westport, MA) finished 59th in 31:01. Coach Alex Silva's Corsairs had only one victory in three games last week, but the win was a big one. UMass Dartmouth (3-5, 1-0- LEC) opened its Little East Conference schedule with a 4-0 victory over Rhode Island College. Ranked 6th in the LEC's Coaches Pre-Season Poll, UMass Dartmouth scored a pair of goals late in the first half against RIC. Mary-Kate Graham (Abington, MA) scored an unassisted goal, her first of the season, at 35:00 for a 1-0 Corsair lead. Less than nine minutes later, Stephanie Oles (Putnam, MA) scored her third of the year with an assist from Barbara Carlin (Burlington, MA) for a 2-0 lead at intermission. Corraine Butler's (Beverly, MA) second goal of the season increased the Corsairs' lead to 3-0 early in the second half. Zarah Schmid (Chelmsford, MA) scored her first goal with an assist from Butler five minutes later to round out the scoring. Goalie Jennifer Nelson (Medford, MA) made three saves to improve her record to 3-5 with 1.75 goals against average. Earlier in the week, the Corsairs were shutout, 3-0, at Babson College and Wheaton College. Nelson had 15 saves in the loss to Babson and added 10 more in the loss to Wheaton College. The Corsairs forced Wheaton's goalie to make 20 saves in the game, but couldn't get one to find the back of the net. The shutout losses were the third and fourth of the season by the Corsairs. UMass Dartmouth dropped a pair of games last week, including a 5-1 non-conference loss at Bridgewater State and a 2-1 loss to Rhode Island College in UMass Dartmouth's Little East Conference opener. The Corsairs are 3-4 overall and 0-1 in the LEC. Fabio Cardoso's (New Bedford, MA) unassisted goal in the second half of the Bridgewater State game was the Corsairs' lone goal in a 5-1 loss. Making his first start in goal for UMass Dartmouth this season, Mike Ring (Peabody, MA) made seven saves in a losing effort. In the Corsairs' LEC opener, RIC got on the board first, less than six minutes into the game. Two minutes later, Mike Takas (Winchester, MA) evened the game at 1-1 with an assist from Rui Estrela (Fall River, MA). RIC scored the game winner midway through the second half for the 2-1 final. Ring made six saves for the Corsairs. The loss to RIC ended a six-game road trip for UMass Dartmouth. Since defeating Wentworth Institute, 4-1, in their season opener, the Corsairs compiled a 2-4 record in six road games. October will bring Coach Niall O'Donnell's squad home for six of their eight games this month, including LEC games with Southern Maine (Oct. 4), UMass Boston (Oct. 21) and Eastern Connecticut (Oct. 25).
The Westport Girls Softball League recently honored UMass Dartmouth assistant field hockey and softball coach Joan Allison. She was recognized for the time and talent she has donated for the last four years in helping the girls, aged 8-14, improve their skills, especially in pitching. Her contributions includes instruction at no cost for several hours one night a week during the fall and winter......Home games this week include women's tennis vs. Johson and Wales, Sept. 30, vs. Eastern Nazarene College on Oct. 2 and Bridgewater State, Oct. 4. Men's soccer has two games on campus, Oct. 1 vs. Stonehill, Oct. 4 vs. Southern Maine. Field hockey will host Keene State on Oct. 4. Football hosts Nichols College Oct. 4. |
