by Jim Mullins Assistant Director Sports Information The Corsairs extended their winning streak to four straight matches and six of their last seven with three victories last week. Coach Warren Preti's Corsairs improved to 7-2 with wins over Johnson and Wales (4-2), Eastern Nazarene College (9-0) and Bridgewater State College (7-2). In winning its three matches last week, UMass Dartmouth compiled a 15-1 record in singles action and 5-3 mark in doubles. Kasha Gula (Mansfield, MA) and Olivia Cunha (New Bedford, MA) were perfect in their three singles matches. Gula was a winner at #3 against JWU and Bridgewater State and at #1 singles against Eastern Nazarene. Cunha won two matches at #4 and one at #5, improving her overall singles record to 7-2. With a pair of victories at #2 singles, Kelly Berger (Buzzards Bay, MA) improved her singles mark to a perfect 7-0 this season. Against JWU, Ashley Kennedy (Holliston, MA) and Thien-Nga Nguyen (Shrewsbury, MA) were 8-1 winners at #2 doubles, while Mary Bourque (Rochester, MA) and Berger took the #1 doubles victory over Bridgewater State. In the 9-0 sweep of ENC, doubles wins came from the teams of Berger and Christine Mace (Abington, MA) (8-1), Nguyen and Christina Bendzewicz (Tyngsboro, MA) (8-3) and Megan Harvey (Boxford, MA) and Cari Leslie (Glen Cove, NY) (8-4). Among the other Corsairs who posted singles victories last week were Stephanie Hauser (Germany) at #2, Shannon Kelleher (Saugus, MA) at #3, Ashley Kennedy at #5 and Bendzewicz at #6 against ENC. Although their winning streak of seven straight overtime victories was finally snapped last week, Coach Marilyn Ritz's Corsairs climbed into the NCAA Division III New England West Regional rankings at #10 with a 6-3 record. UMass Dartmouth picked up its sixth win of the season with a 1-0 victory over Salem State College. After a scoreless first half, Kelly Place's (Ashland, MA) third goal of the season, an unassisted effort at 11:29 of the second half, proved to be the game-winner. Paula Malcom (Milford, MA) improved her won-loss record in the Corsairs' goal to 4-0 by making a pair of saves against the Vikings. UMass Dartmouth outshot Salem State by a 9-6 margin. The Corsairs' streak of seven consecutive overtime victories dated back to Sept. 22, 1996 when they scored a 1-0 OT win over Wheaton College. Since that game, the Corsairs had gone 5-0 in OT games last season and 2-0 this season until falling to Keene State College. The OT loss was the first suffered by UMass Dartmouth since a 1-0 OT loss to Clark on October 24, 1995. In the loss to Keene State, which also snapped a five-game winning streak by the Corsairs, UMass Dartmouth trailed 1-0 when Place tied the game with her fourth goal of the season and second of the week. Place's goal at 16:32 of the second half was assisted by Karyn Hodgkins (Dartmouth, MA). Tied at the end of regulation, 1-1, Keene State got the game-winner past Becky Medeiros (Fall River, MA) for the 2-1 final OT. Medeiros's record in goal falls to 2-3. The Corsairs outshot Keene State, 18-17. Place's fourth goal tied her for the team lead with Maureen Maloney (Blackstone, MA) with four goals each. Place is the Corsairs' top scorer with four goals and two assists for 10 points, followed by Maloney (4-0-8) and both Maureen Zukowski (Dartmouth, MA) (2-3-7) and Ashley Dorman (Harwich, MA) (3-1-7). Coach Bill Kavanaugh's quick-strike offense scored 35 first-half points on the way to a 48-14 non-conference victory over Nichols College last Saturday. Ranked #8 in this week's New England ECAC Division III poll, the Corsairs got three more touchdown passes from Jay Furtado (Swansea, MA) and 418 yards in total offense, while the defensive unit gave up only a pair of scores for UMass Dartmouth's third win in four outings. Mike Masse (Wareham, MA) got the Corsairs on the scoreboard first with a one-yard run followed by the first of six Eric Lundell (Mansfield, MA) extra points. After Nichols tied the score late in the quarter, UMass Dartmouth came right back with a 22-yard TD pass from Furtado to Ryan Bland (Dartmouth, MA). The Corsairs added to their lead less than five minutes later on Steve Wozniak's (Whitman, MA) 12-yard TD run. Mike Armandi (Foxboro, MA) grabbed a seven-yard TD from Furtado with 3:10 to play in the first half for a 28-7 Corsair lead. Just before halftime, Wozniak punched in his second 12-yard TD of the game for the commanding 35-7 lead. UMass Dartmouth added a pair of third quarter scores to round out the scoring. Mike Cotten (Middleboro, MA) caught a 40-yard TD pass from Furtado, his first of the season, and Shawn Harris (Dartmouth, MA) closed out the scoring with a three-yard run late in the third quarter for the 48-14 final score. A New England Football Conference (NEFC) and ECAC Honor Roll selection, Furtado continues to lead the conference in passing (33-93) with 13 TD passes and only two interceptions. He also leads the conference in total offense, averaging 216.5 yards per game. Bland's 24 catches for five TDs and 429 yards gives him the conference lead in catches per game (6.0) and receiving yards (107.3 yards per game). Bland is also third in punting with a 35.3 yard average. Lundell is the NEFC's top kicker, connecting on 15 of 20 extra points and one of 2 field goals for 18 points. UMass Dartmouth's golf team earned its second win in three outings last week with a 309-402 victory over Emerson College. Coach Paul Fistori's Corsairs also placed fifth in the University of Southern Maine Golf Tournament. In the victory over Emerson College, Jon Ruel (Mattapoisett, MA) turned in the Corsairs' low score, carding a 74 for the 14 holes played. Matt Drake was one stroke back at 75 and Brendan Meehan was third at 76. Andy Horsfall was fourth at 79 and Bill Spellissy at 85. Competing in a ten-team field at Gorham (ME) Country Club, the fifth-place Corsairs were led by Horsfall's 78, which tied him for sixth place. Two shots back tied at eighth with an 80 was Meehan. Rounding out the field for UMass Dartmouth were Spellissy with an 85 and Matt Lane's (Holden, MA) 87. Scoring woes continue to haunt the Corsairs (3-6-0, 0-2-0 LEC) as they dropped a pair of games to extend their losing streak to four. Coach Niall O'Donnell's team was shutout by Stonehill College, 3-0, in a non-conference game on campus. Three days later, the Corsairs scored a pair of first half goals to tie Southern Maine 2-2 in a Little East Conference match. But the Corsairs were blanked in the second half and gave up a pair of goals in a 4-2 loss to the Huskies. Goalie Mike Ring (Peabody, MA) took both losses in goal for the Corsairs. Ring made three saves in the loss to Stonehill College and added three more against Southern Maine. Trailing, 1-0, midway through the first half, Rob Workman's (Bridgewater, MA) fourth goal of the season tied the game. Chris Gridelli (Woburn, MA) assisted on the Workman goal at 22:30. Thirteen minutes later, Erik Reis (Westport, MA) scored his first with an assist from Mike Tuccillo (Woodbridge, VA) for a 2-1 Corsair lead. But five minutes later the Huskies tied the score a 2-2. Workman's four goals and eight points (8th in LEC) top the Corsairs' scoring through nine games. Tori Terrassi (So. Easton, MA) (3-1-7) and Chris Serafini (W. Springfield, MA) (2-3-7) are tied for second and Gridelli (2-2-6) is third. In goal, Ring is 0-4 with a 3.50 goals against average. Just like the men's soccer team, Coach Alex Silva's Corsairs are having trouble scoring goals. And when they do score goals they can't score enough of them as they did in a 4-3 loss to Southern Maine last week. UMass Dartmouth (3-7, 1-1 LEC) opened the week with a 3-0 shutout loss at Connecticut College. Goalie Jennifer Nelson (Medford, MA) took the loss in both games, making 10 saves in the Connecticut College loss and another six against the Huskies. Her record fell to 3-7 overall with a 2.10 goals against average and a pair of shutouts to her credit. UMass Dartmouth's top offensive scorer has been Jennifer Tolson (Whitman, MA) and Stephanie Oles (Putnam, CT) with six points each. Tolson and Oles both have three goals to tie for 13th in the LEC. The loss to Southern Maine was especially tough for the Corsairs. Trailing 1-0, Michelle Cameron (North Reading, Ma) tied the game at 42:15 with an assist from Vicki Tsatsis (Lynnfield, MA). However, less than 35 seconds later, Huskies got the goal back to take a 2-1 lead at intermission. In the second half Tolson's unassisted goal tied the score at 2-2. The Huskies took a 3-2 lead at the 71:40 mark, but Cameron's second goal of the game, with an assist from Mary-Kate Graham (Abington, MA) tied the score at 3-3 with five minutes to play. For a second time, however, Southern Maine got the goal right back, scoring the game-winner less than a minute and a half later for the 4-3 final. at Salem State Invitational UMass Dartmouth finished 1-2 at the Salem State College Invitational Tournament as Coach Rick Quintin's Corsairs (4-8) continue to show improvement this season. Among the highlights last weekend at the three-game tournament was the performance of Amy Wilson (Dartmouth, MA), who was named to the All-Tournament Team. Wilson had 48 kills in the three matches for UMass Dartmouth. The Corsairs missed a chance to knock off the University of New England in the tournament opener for UMass Dartmouth. After dropping the first two sets, 15-,7 and, 15-5, UMass Dartmouth came right back to even the match at two sets each by winning games three and four by 15-8 and 15-13. In the fifth and deciding set, UMass Dartmouth fell 15-13 for the 3-2 final. Endicott College was the victim of UMass Dartmouth's lone victory, a 3-1 win in the Corsairs' second match. UMass Dartmouth won the opener, 15-3, but lost the second set, 15-6. The Corsairs then ran off a pair of wins in the next two games, 15-5 and 15-7 for the 3-1 win. Gordon College handed the Corsairs a 3-0 loss in UMass Dartmouth's final game. Gordon College swept the Corsairs by scores of 15-11, 15-12 and 15-12. In addition to Wilson, Heather Louro (Dartmouth, MA) had a strong tournament with 68 assists, while teammate Marci Lima (Dartmouth, MA) had 44 assists in the first two games. The Corsairs performances in the last two matches were impressive considering UMass Dartmouth had to play without starter Gen O'Brien (Swansea, MA). Coach Susan Yacubian's squad had a successful first show last week at Wesleyan College. A field of 12 teams competed in the event with a 186 riders and 38 classes. In the Over Fences classes, all of the UMass Dartmouth jumpers rode in the Novice Division. Sarah Roberts placed first, tri-captain Stephanie Pacheco was fifth and Sarah Richardson was sixth. Tri-captain Mary Ellen Blombach and Cara David competed in the same class and took first and second, accumulating enough points to compete at the Intermeidate Level. In the Intermediate Level on the Flat, Blombach placed fourth. In the Novice Level, David was third, Richardson was sixth and Pachecho was second. In the Beginner Walk-Trot-Canter Division, Monica Asaff was second, Jill Pacheo third and Becky Torres third. |
