2001-2002 Season Review

The UMass Dartmouth women's basketball team counted heavily on the contributions of three seniors during the 2001-2002 season and each senior came through as expected. Although the Corsairs posted a 4-20 overall record (1-13 in the Little East Conference), Coach Christine Elliott witnessed the development of several players who will form the nucleus of next year's team.

UMass Dartmouth's three senior co-captains, guard Jess Cummings (Middleboro, MA), forward Carla Ferreira (Marion, MA) and guard Becky Mackey (Quincy, MA) were among the team leaders in almost ever statistical category during the 2001-02 season.

Cummings was the Corsairs' leading scorer, averaging 10.6 points per game (15th in LEC) with 5.4 rebounds per game along with 33 assists and 29 steals, each ranking third on the team. She also made 29-73 three-pointers, third best for the Corsairs who ranked third in the LEC in three-point shooting (104 of 337, 30%).

With a 7.8 points per game average Ferreira was fourth in scoring, but was UMass Dartmouth's top rebounder. Ferreira averaged 8.5 rebounds per game to finish in a tie for 7th in the LEC. She was third in field goals (73), and first in free throws, making 48 of 97 (49.5%). Ferreira led the Corsairs in blocked shots with 10 and steals with 48. Her two steals per game average ranked 8th in the LEC.

While the Corsairs will miss the graduating seniors, several underclassmen are ready to make significant contributions next year. Sophomore guard Kelly O'Neil (Mansfield, MA) was among the top underclassmen, appearing in 17 games and averaging 9.94 points and 2.5 rebounds per game with 29 steals. From three-point range, O'Neil was the Corsairs' second best shooter (30 of 85, 35.3%).

Sophomore forward Amy Satkevich (Quincy, MA) was one of four players to appear in all 24 games for UMass Dartmouth. She averaged 8.6 points and 5.6 rebounds per game, third and second best respectively. She also had seven blocked shots and 15 steals.

One of the biggest surprises of the season was the development of a pair of first-year back court players, Bridget Bowes (Mansfield, MA) and Casey Ridge (Quincy, MA). In 23 games, Bowes averaged 7.6 points and 2.8 rebounds, while finishing second in assists with 43. From three-point range, Bowes led the Corsairs in both shots made (33) and attempted (112), shooting 29% from beyond the line.

In her first season at the collegiate level, Ridge proved she could handle the Corsairs' offense. Ridge led the LEC in assists with an average of 5.2 per game, tied for 21st nationally in Division III. She added 4.5 points and 2.5 rebounds to her team-high 98 assists and 39 steals (second on the team).

Among the Corsairs' other top scorers for the season were junior forward Larissa Morse (Sterling, MA) (4.1 points, 3 rebounds), Mackey (3 points, one rebound), and first-year forward Leang Chhean (Fall River, MA) (2.3 points, 3 rebounds).
