2004-05 season review story:
Klitzner's turnaround of UMass Dartmouth women's basketball finishes second season
(Dartmouth, MA) - Mick Klitzner's turn around of the UMass Dartmouth women's basketball program completed its second season with a 13-13
overall record and a 5-9 mark in the Little East Conference. Since taking over the Corsairs' women's program, Klitzner's teams have
posted a combined record of 24-29 in his first two seasons.
With two straight LEC Tournament appearances and the most wins by a Corsair women's basketball team since SMU went 13-12 under Judy
Sullivan in 1992-93, it would appear Klitzner has the UMass Dartmouth women's program headed in the right direction.
Despite losing one of the top backcourt players in the LEC to graduation, the Corsairs have a solid collection of returning players
who saw significant playing time during the 2004-05 season. It will be difficult to replace the contribution of graduating senior captain
Casey Ridge (Cambridge, MA), who led the LEC in assists with 5.3 per game and was second in steals with 2.4 per game. She averaged only
4.3 points per game from her point guard spot, but she was in control of the Corsairs offense throughout the season.
The bright spot for UMass Dartmouth after the 2004-05 season was the development of several newcomers to the program along with another
solid effort from a pair of key returners. Junior Kerrie Augenstein (East Greenwich, RI/Bayview Academy) established herself as one of
the top players in the LEC, earning Second Team All-LEC honors as the Corsairs' leading scorer with 13.7 points per game, second best in
the LEC. She added 4.5 rebounds per game and made 143-321 field goals (both team highs) for a shooting percentage of .445, ninth best
in the conference. She also connected on 21-62 three pointers (.339) and made 50-66 free throws (.758). She also added 38 assists, 35
steals and six blocked shots, a significant improvement over her sophomore season when she came off the bench to average 6.3 points
and 4.5 rebounds per game.
While Augenstein was providing the scoring punch for UMass Dartmouth, her teammate senior captain Maura Armstrong (Worcester, MA/Auburn)
added a strong rebounding presence. She led the Corsairs with 6.3 rebounds per game (10th in the LEC) to go with her 5.4 points per
game. With an average of 1.42 blocked shots per game her 37 blocks were second best in the LEC.
The biggest surprise for Klitzner last season was the rapid development of three newcomers to the program who combined to win the
LEC Rookie of the Week award four times. In her first season at UMass Dartmouth, Lisa Satkevich (Quincy, MA/Fontbonne Academy) earned
the award twice, while scoring 8.5 points with 3.3 rebounds per game. She displayed a great shooting touch from the floor, making 72 of 145
field goals to lead the LEC in shoot percentage at .497. Her 21 minutes per game were sixth on the team and she also chipped in 17
blocks, 17 steals and 14 assists.
In her first season, Ashley Chard (Burlington, CT/St. Paul) was the Corsairs' second option from beyond the three-point line behind
Augenstein. She made 17 of 51 three points (.333) and was second in the LEC from the free throw line making 70 of 91 for .769. She
averaged 19 minutes off the bench for UMass Dartmouth with 27 steals and 3.7 rebounds per game.
Lindsay Marsh (Bristol, CT/Eastern) was the third Rookie of the Week honoree along with Satkevich and Chard. She averaged 8.6 points per
game with 14 blocked shots and 22 seals. She averaged slightly more than 19 minutes per game and shot .389 from the floor (75-193) and
29-42 from the free throw line (.690). Her biggest contribution came in rebounding at 4.4 per game, third best on the team behind
Armstrong and Augenstein.
Klitzner also had a handful of other new players who he didn't hesitate to move in and out of the lineup throughout the season.
Sophomore Laura Goggin (Rockland, MA) averaged 23 minutes per game and had 12 starts while averaging 6.5 points per game and 2.7
rebounds. She shot .338 (66-195) and made 12-62 from beyond the arc. First-year player Vicky Palantzas (Brockton, MA) added 3.2 points and
3.1 rebounds per game, coming off the bench plus 19 blocked shots.
