Corsair Women's Indoor Track and Field

2001-2002 Season Review



Competing at the annual Alliance Championships/Little East Conference Indoor Track and Field Championships, UMass Dartmouth's men place fifth in the Alliance and fourth within the LEC. The Corsairs' women placed seventh in the Alliance and fifth in the LEC. The Alliance Championships bring together the best teams and track athletes from the LEC and the Massachusetts State College Athletic Conference in an annual competition to determine both Alliance and LEC champions. This year the event took place Feb.10, 2002 at the Reggie Lewis Center in Boston, MA.

The UMass Dartmouth men had one LEC champion and four more runners-up along with three second-place Alliance finishes as well. Sophomore Vinnie Carafone (Norwood, MA) was the LEC champion at 55 meters with a winning time of 6.89, while taking third the LEC 200 meters in 23.65. Second-place LEC finishes came from freshman Ken Wayman (East Templeton, MA) in the 800 meters (2:01.09), junior Corey Bachand (Norton, MA) in the 3000 meters (8:57.69), senior Mike Young (Norton, MA) in the shot put (42-4 3/4) and the 4x800 relay team of Wayman, junior Jeremy Nute (Westborough, MA), junior Pat Joyce (Weymouth, MA) and Bachand (8:25.75). Wayman, Bachand and the 800-meter team were also second in the Alliance as well. Senior Kent Oldmixon (Mansfield, MA) was third in the LEC shot put with a throw of 40-8 3/4.

First-year runner Stefanie Hunt (Shirley, MA) and junior Randi Sullivan (Seekonk, MA) were among the top performers for UMass Dartmouth's women's team at the Alliance/LEC Championships. Hunt finished second in the LEC 1000 meters and third in the Alliance at 3:11.05. Sullivan was third in the LEC 3000 meters and fourth in the Alliance at 11:12.55. Conroy, Sullivan, first-year runner Stefanie Zopatti (Weymouth, MA) and Hunt took third in both the LEC and Alliance 4x800 meter.

In the annual New England Division III Championships held Feb. 16 at Bates College, Bachand placed eighth in the 3000 meters with a time of 8:55.54 to earn All-New England Division III distinction. Bachand also teamed with Wayman, Nute and Joyce to finish ninth in the 4x800 relay with a time of 8:21.69. Bachand concluded the 2001-02 season by placing 13th in the 3000 meters at the ECAC Championships held March 1-2 at Tufts. Bachand finished the 3000 meters in 8:51.51.

For the Corsair women, Hunt and the 4x800 relay team of Sullivan, Conroy, Zopatti and Hunt qualified for the New England Division III Championships held Feb.16 at the University of Southern Maine. Hunt ran the 1000 meters in 3:11.74 and the 4x800-relay team finished at 10:41.61. Hunt qualified for the ECAC Championships held March 1-2 at Tufts University and finished the 1000 meters in 3:09.82, her best time of the season.
