#3 UMass Dartmouth advances to LEC semifinals with 17-12 win over #6 Southern Maine
(Dartmouth, MA) – Katelyn Elliott’s (Lowell, MA) four goals tied the UMass Dartmouth single-season record and lifted the Corsairs to a 17-12 First Round victory over the University of Southern Maine in a Little East Conference Women’s Lacrosse Tournament game Tuesday afternoon at Cressy Field.
The victory improves UMass Dartmouth to 10-5 overall and moves the Corsairs into the LEC Semifinal Round to be played Friday, April 30 in Plymouth, NH. The third-seeded Corsairs will take on #2 Keene State College (10-4) in the second semi-final round game at 3:30 pm, while the host and top-seed Plymouth State University Panthers (13-0) will take on the winner of tomorrow’s #5 Western Connecticut (4-10) at #4 Eastern Connecticut (7-6) First Round game. The game had to be postponed one day due to wet playing conditions at Eastern Connecticut.
The two semi-final winners on Friday will meet in the LEC Championship game to be played Saturday afternoon, May 1 at 1 p.m. on the Plymouth State University campus.
In addition to Elliott’s record-setting goals and a pair of assists, the Corsairs received four goals from tri-captain Meghan Corfield (Framingham, MA), along with three from Katelyn Sullivan (New Bedford, MA). Mary Doherty (Loudonville, NY) added a pair of goals along with two each from tri-captain Kristine Johnson (Walpole, MA) and Dre Travers (Weymouth, MA). Corsair goalie and tri-captain Liz Holland (Quincy, MA) made 11 saves in net.
Jen Carboni (Cheshire, ME) led the Huskies with four goals and an assist, while Justene Larnerd (Cherry Hill, NJ) added three goals. Elicia Biczak (Standish, ME) and Jesse Superchi (Campton, NH) scored two goals each. Huskie goalie Jenna Wasylak (Dunstable, MA) turned away 18 shots.
A first-year player for UMass Dartmouth this season, Elliott’s four goals lifted her season total to 54 for the 2004 season, tieing the mark set by Emily Valorz in 1997.
