UMASS DARTMOUTH EDGES NEW ENGLAND COLLEGE, 14-13

WELLINGTON, FL–The University of Massachusetts Dartmouth’s women’s lacrosse team evened their overall record in thrilling fashion Thursday afternoon.

Senior midfielder Mary Doherty (Loudonville, NY/Shaker HS) won a face-off, then raced half the length of the field and scored unassisted with 2.1 seconds remaining to give UMass Dartmouth a 14-13 victory over New England College at the Wellington Polo Grounds Thursday afternoon.

The goal was the second of the game for Doherty. Junior Katelyn Elliott (Lowell, MA/Lowell HS) led the Corsair attack with seven goals, senior defenseman Katelyn Sullivan (New Bedford, MA/New Bedford HS) and sophomore midfielder Marie Spang (Wakefield, MA/Wakefield HS) each scored twice, and freshman midfielder Connie Jones (Springfield, MA/Somers HS) scored once. Spang had three assists, and Sullivan added one.

“It was a great play,” said UMass Dartmouth Head Coach Jerry Jennings. “Mary controlled the draw at midfield, ran half the field and shot and scored an unassisted goal to win the game for us. She dodged everyone, went one-on-one with the goalie, and scored. There were kids diving at her from the right and from the left, but she made the play.”

The Corsairs started out quickly, scoring on their first four shots and taking a 4-1 lead before the Pilgrims rallied and eventually tied the score, setting the stage for Doherty’s game-winning goal.

UMD was out shot, 28-26. Corsair sophomore goalie Erin Doherty (West Newbury, MA/Pentucket HS) made 14 saves, while NEC's goalie made 10.

The Corsairs, who dropped an exhibition game to the University of Miami Wednesday night, 18-16, are now 1-1. They will return to action when they host Nichols next Tuesday afternoon.
