UMASS DARTMOUTH ROCKS NICHOLS, 23-7

NORTH DARTMOUTH, MA–The University of Massachusetts Dartmouth’s women’s lacrosse team scored eight goals in the first seven and a half minutes of the game and went on to defeat Nichols, 23-7, in a non-conference game at Cressy Field Tuesday afternoon.

Freshman midfielder Connie Jones (Springfield, MA/Somers (CT) HS) and senior midfielder Mary Doherty (Loudonville, NY/Shaker HS) each scored twice before the game was seven minutes old. Jones converted a pass from sophomore midfielder Marie Spang (Wakefield, MA/Wakefield HS) 12 seconds into the game, then scored again after taking a pass from Doherty just over two minutes into the contest. Doherty scored unassisted 1:44 into the game, then converted a pass from Spang with 25:08 left in the first half.

Junior forward Katelyn Elliott (Lowell, MA/Lowell HS) led UMass Dartmouth’s offense with eight goals, one better than her previous career high of seven in a game. Elliott scored the fifth UMD goal with 25:42 remaining in the first half, then scored three more goals in the first half and added four more scores in the second half.

Spang finished with four goals and six assists, Doherty with four goals, and Jones and senior defenseman Katelyn Sullivan (New Bedford, MA/New Bedford HS) each had three. Senior defenseman Andrea Travers had the other Corsair goal. Kristen Boreham led the Bison with four goals,

“We played well, particularly on offense,” said UMass Dartmouth Head Coach Jerry Jennings. “We have between eight and ten plays on offense, and we used them all very well today. We got everyone some playing time, and we took advantage of our speed”

UMD out shot the Bison, 40-15. Corsair sophomore goalie Erin Doherty (West Newbury, MA/Pentucket HS) made seven saves, while Erica Adams of Nichols had 12.

The Corsairs improved to 2-1 with the victory, while NC fell to 1-3. They will return to action when they host Endicott Thursday afternoon.
