UMASS DARTMOUTH DROPS WOMEN’S LACROSSE OPENER, 11-8

NORTH DARTMOUTH, MA–The University of Massachusetts Dartmouth’s women’s lacrosse team staged a furious comeback, but couldn’t hold on and dropped their season opener, 11-8, to Salve Regina at Cressy Field Tuesday afternoon.

The Corsairs, who fell behind, 4-1 less than six minutes into the game and trailed, 7-4, at halftime, scored four of the first five goals in the second half. Junior Katelyn Elliott (Lowell, MA/Lowell HS) scored her fourth goal of the game to tie the score, 8-08 with 9:18 remaining.

But the Seahawks scored the final three goals. Erika Dick’s goal with 6:52 to play put SRU ahead for good, and Melissa Garcia and Alicia Cunningham followed with goals to account for the final score.

Elliott also had two assists for UMD. Senior Katelyn Sullivan (New Bedford, MA/New Bedford HS), senior Mary Doherty (Loudonville, NY/Shaker HS), sophomore Marie Spang (Wakefield, MA/Wakefield HS) and junior Susie Nearhoof (Frederick, MD/Johnson HS/Frederick CC) scored UMass Dartmouth’s other goals.

Whitney Bushee, Cara Dunn and Garcia each scored twice for Salve Regina, which got single goals from Dick, Cunningham, Whitney Loeb, Nicole Fecteau and Madeline Berube. Dick also had two assists.

“We came back strong after a slow start,” said UMass Dartmouth Head Coach Jerry Jennings. “We started a lot of young players, and had a lot of people in new positions. We need some more game experience, and when we get that, we will improve.”

SRU out shot the Corsairs, 36-23. UMD sophomore goalie Erin Doherty (West Newbury, MA/Pentucket HS) made 15 saves, while the Seahawks’ Brook Bowley made eight.

UMass Dartmouth fell to 0-1 with the defeat, while Salve Regina improved to 2-2. The Corsairs will return to action when they head for Florida on their spring break trip next week.
