Western Connecticut Women's Soccer Advances in Little East Conference Tournament... Defeats UMass Dartmouth, 4-1

The Western Connecticut State University women's soccer team advances to the semifinals of the Little East Conference Tournament following its 4-1 victory over University of Massachusetts Dartmouth at Westside Athletic Complex Tuesday night.

The Colonials will face #1 seed and host Keene State College on Friday, Nov. 7 at 4 p.m. in the semifinal nightcap. Number two seed Eastern Connecticut will face upset-minded and number six seed Rhode Island College in the semifinal opener in Keene, NH at 1:30 p.m. The Anchorwomen upset third seeded Plymouth State University, 3-1 in the today's other quarterfinal match.

After falling behind, 1-0, the Colonials, 13-4-4, scored four unanswered goals including book-end tallies from freshman midfielder Jessica Gomes (Wallingford, CT). They were her fifth and sixth goals of the season.

Gomes' first came at the 30:44 mark when she was left open from 12 yards out after a pass from Nicole Corbin (Clinton, CT) in the right corner. In the 78th minute, her sixth goal was unassisted after she collected the ball 45 yards away and outran the Corsairs' defense.

Lia Pellegrino-Young (Hinesburg, VT) put the Colonials up 2-1 when she headed home her sixth goal of the season. Corbin and Katherine Massicotte (Naugatuck, CT) earned the assists on the game-winning goal after a spectacular combination of passes in the far-side corner.

Corbin wasn't done. The LECs leading scorer, with 17 goals and 42 points, added a third assist when she found Heather Thurston (Naugatuck, CT) wide open in the middle of the box in the 56th minute. It was Thurston's first goal of the season.

UMass Dartmouth, 6-9-4, went up 1-0 when sophomore forward Kelly Fitts (Fairhave, MA) deposited the ball in the back of the net after being left alone in front the goal mouth. Shauna Ahearn (Plymouth, MA) had the assist on the Corsairs' goal.

Kristen Bartholomew (Bethel, CT) made one save for WestConn after UMass Dartmouth was held to two shots in each stanza.

Amanda Tavares (Dartmouth, MA), this week's LEC Defensive Player of the Week, made four saves for UMass Dartmouth.
