CORSAIR WOMEN’S SOCCER BOWS TO BRIDGEWATER STATE

Thursday, September 29, 2005

NORTH DARTMOUTH, MA-Bridgewater State converted twice on loose balls off corner kicks in the first half to erase an early University of Massachusetts Dartmouth lead and went on to defeat the Corsairs, 3-1, at rainy Cressy Field Thursday afternoon.

Freshman midfielder Jessica Swenson (Salem, MA/Salem HS) gave UMD an early 1-0 lead. She picked up a loose ball after a corner kick and scored 8:29 into the match to put the Corsairs on top.

The Bears replied in kind. Heather Fredette tied the game at the 12:22 mark when her shot after a scramble off a corner kick deflected in off a Corsair defender. Five minutes later, Jessica Chiachio scored on a similar play. Fredette scored her second goal of the first half, picking up a loose ball after a corner kick and flicking it high into the net at 27:08 of the first half.

The Corsairs mounted a comeback in the second half, but were unable to score.

“Our plan in the second half was a lot better, but we need to be a little more patient,” said UMass Dartmouth Head Coach Alex Silva. “We attacked better in the second half, but we weren’t able to capitalize on our chances. We’re still young, and we have to be more disciplined.”

BSC out shot the Corsairs, 15-11. Sophomore goalkeeper Shawna Howell (Uxbridge, MA/Uxbridge HS) made 12 saves, while Emily Schlosser had five for the Bears.

UMass Dartmouth fell to 3-5 with the defeat, while Bridgewater improved to 4-3. The Corsairs will return to action when they host Little East Conference opponent Rhode Island College Saturday afternoon at 3:30, following the homecoming football game against Endicott.
