PSU Women’s Soccer battles UMass Dartmouth to 1-1 tie

Panthers clinch Little East Conference playoff spot

PLYMOUTH, N.H.Plymouth State University and the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth battled to a 1-1 overtime deadlock Saturday afternoon at Panther Field in the Little East Conference women’s soccer regular season finale for both schools.

The outcome gives PSU a 4-10-2 overall record and a 2-4-1 LEC mark, while UMD is 4-11-1 overall and 1-5-1 in conference play.  The Panthers clinch the sixth seed in the upcoming LEC Tournament, while the Corsairs’ season comes to an end.  PSU will travel to third-seeded Keene State on Tuesday for a first round match-up.

In a back and forth game, the Panthers got on the scoreboard first when junior Allison Frobey (Sandy Hook, Conn.) took a long throw-in that found the foot of junior Ashley Dassatti (Hampstead, NH) who deposited in the back of the net for her third goal of the season.

The second half was also a defensive battle and in the 54th minute the Corsairs were awarded a penalty kick.  Freshman Sarah Killingbeck (Norton, Mass.) converted for UMD to even the score and send the game into overtime.

PSU had a golden opportunity in the first minute of extra time as freshman Brianna Coderre (Ira, Vt.) rang a shot off the crossbar.  The Panthers controlled much of the overtime periods but couldn’t push a goal through.

PSU finished with a 20-11advantage in shots.  Senior goaltender Hayley Quinones (Waitsfield, Vt.) recorded six saves, while sophomore Shawna Howell (Uxbridge, Mass.) made 10 saves for UMD.
