CORSAIRS FALL TO ROGER WILLIAMS IN HOME OPENER

NORTH DARTMOUTH, MA-Roger Williams’ women’s soccer team took advantage of their chances in the second half, scoring twice and holding off the University of Massachusetts-Dartmouth for a 2-0 victory in the Corsairs’ home opener Thursday afternoon at Cressy Field.

After a scoreless first half, in which UMass Dartmouth outshot the Hawks, 13-6, RWU struck first. Caitlin Mayo took possession at midfield, and drilled a 20-yard shot over UMD freshman goalkeeper Shawna Howell (Uxbridge, MA/Uxbridge HS) 15 minutes into second half action. Five minutes later, Stephanie Johnson made it 2-0 with a 35-yard shot.

The Corsairs came back and pressed the attack for the final 15 minutes. But goalkeeper Kayla Leonard made seven saves for RWU, and UMass Dartmouth failed to score.

“It was disappointing,” said UMass Dartmouth Head Coach Alex Silva. “We outplayed them in the first half, but we failed to score. They took advantage of their chances in the second half when we didn’t mark them in the middle. We had our chances in the last 15 minutes, but we didn’t play as well in the second half as we did in the first.”

The Hawks improved to 2-2 with the victory, while the Corsairs lost for the first time this season and fell to 2-1. UMass Dartmouth will return to action when they host Johnson and Wales next Thursday afternoon.
