                              SALVE REGINA DOWNS CORSAIRS IN OT

NORTH DARTMOUTH, MA-Kacie Gallo’s 30 yard shot sailed high into the net as darkness descended on the UMass Dartmouth Athletic Complex Wednesday afternoon, giving Salve Regina a 3-2, double overtime victory over the University of Massachusetts at Cressy Field.

Gallo’s shot sailed over the outstretched arms of Corsair freshman goalkeeper Shawna Howell (Uxbridge, MA/Uxbridge HS) just 2:30 before the end of the second overtime period.

Gallo’s’ goal marked the first time all day that UMass Dartmouth had trailed. Freshman forward Gina Goddard (Florence, MA/Northampton HS) converted a cross from freshman forward Nicole Nelligan (Whitman, MA/Whitman-Hanson HS) at the 28:23 mark of the first half, giving UMD a 1-0 lead. Laura McPhee tied the game for the Seahawks, rifling home a loose ball just 1:01 before halftime.

Goddard’s second goal of the match gave the Corsairs a 2-1 lead. She beat SRU goalkeeper Nicole Ferreira to a loose ball and scored with 20 minutes and 20 seconds remaining. Salve Regina tied it when Breann Carello scored on a 25-yard direct free kick less than four minutes later.

“I thought we controlled play, and had a lot of good shots,” said UMass Dartmouth Assistant Coach Sarah Bourque. “Their goalkeeper had a very good game, I have to give her a lot of credit for keeping us from scoring.”

UMD out shot the Seahawks, 27-14. Howell made 10 saves for the Corsairs, while Nicole Ferreira made 17 saves for SRU.

UMass Dartmouth fell to 4-9 with the defeat, while Salve Regina improved to 5-6 with the victory. The Corsairs will return to action when they visit Southern Maine Saturday afternoon.
