NORTH DARTMOUTH, MA-Diana Thibaudeau’s 10-yard shot with less than 13 minutes remaining was the only goal of the match Sunday afternoon, giving Southern Maine a 1-0 Little East Conference victory over the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth’s women’s soccer team at wind-swept Cressy Field.
Julia Cyr intercepted a failed clearing attempt near the edge of the penalty box and sent a pass to Thibaudeau. Her low shot beat freshman goalkeeper Shawna Howell (Uxbridge, MA/Uxbridge HS) at the 77:14 mark.
The game was a marked contrast in halves. In the first half, playing with a strong north wind at their back, the Corsairs out shot USM, 18-4, and had the edge in chances. In the second half, playing with the wind, the Huskies had a 19-7 edge in shots.
“We dominated play in the first half, and they dominated play for a good part of the time in the second half,” said UMass Dartmouth Assistant Coach Sarah Bourque.
UMD out shot
UMass Dartmouth fell to 4-10 and 1-4 in Little East play with the defeat, while Southern Maine improved to 9-3-1 and 4-0 with the victory. The Corsairs will return to action when they host Keene State next Saturday afternoon.
