WOMEN’S SOCCER BOWS AT EASTERN CONNECTICUT, 5-2

WILLIMANTIC, CT- Host Eastern Connecticut State broke a 2-2 halftime tie with three second-half goals and went on to defeat the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth’s women’s soccer team, 5-2, in the final regular season match for both teams at Nevers Field Sunday afternoon.

Kaytee Zielinski broke the tie when she drove a rebound past UMass Dartmouth freshman goalkeeper Tanya Braga (Hudson, MA/Hudson HS) at the 56:06 mark. Nicole Gaudette made it 4-2 when she scored eight minutes later, and Megan Sheehan capped the scoring when she converted a penalty kick at 73:51.

The Corsairs scored twice in the final 12 minutes of the first half to deadlock the game at 2-2. Sophomore midfielder Andrea Mota (Somerset, MA/Somerset HS) converted a pass from freshman midfielder Katlyn Duarte (New Bedford, MA/New Bedford HS) at the 31:33 mark. Junior forward Sarah Killingbeck (Norton, MA/Norton HS) tied the score when she flicked home a free kick by freshman defender Kelsey Boothby (Holbrook, MA/Holbrook HS) 11 seconds before halftime. Gaudette and Christine Lemieux scored the first two goals of the game for the Warriors.

“We played a good first half,” said UMass Dartmouth Head Coach Alex Silva. “We came back from a 2-0 deficit, and we were playing well, and they got the momentum in the second half. Our kids fought hard for a good portion of the second half, and the final score didn’t really reflect the play.”

ECSU out shot the Corsairs, 20-5.  Braga made eight saves, while Megan Gloster and Kim Church made one stop each for the Warriors.

UMass Dartmouth dropped to 5-11-2 and 1-5-1 in the Little East Conference with the defeat, while Eastern Connecticut State improved to 10-5-2 and 5-2-0 in LEC action with the victory. The contest marked the final action of the season for the Corsairs.
