Corsair women finish second, men seventh

at New England Division III Championships

(Dartmouth, MA) – The UMass Dartmouth women’s swimming and diving team finished second overall from a field of 21 teams at the 2004 New England Intercollegiate Swimming and Diving Championships hosted by Bentley College February 20-22. 

Coach Cathy Motta’s Corsairs were a consistent second throughout the three-day event, holding second place after each of the three days of competition.  UMass Dartmouth, third in the New Englands a year ago, finished with a total of 722 points, trailing only the host team from Bentley College with 895 points.

Leading the way for UMass Dartmouth was Amy Stucchi (Westboro, MA), who earned a pair of first-place finishes and was part of a second-place relay team.  Teammate Seanna McRae (East Taunton, MA) had a pair of second-place finishes and one third and was part of three relay teams which finished first, second and fourth overall.  Meaghan Coache (New Bedford, MA) also had a successful competition with one first and three seconds and a third, plus she was part of a pair of relay teams.

Swimming in her final New England Division III championships, Stucchi, a senior co-captain, turned in a sparkling performance for the Corsairs.  She finished first in the 200 Yard IM (2:14.80) and was also first in the 200 Yard Fly (2:12.06). She picked up a second place in the 400 Yard IM with a time of 4:45.55 and later teamed with McRae, Cassie Bryant (Ipswich, MA), and Coache for a second in the 400 Yard Medley Relay (4:11.59).

McRae almost matched Stucchi in top performances, finishing second in the 100 Yard Backstroke (1:02.77) and second in the 100 Yard IM (1:04.24).  McRae added a third in the 50 Yard Backstroke with a time of 29.78 and teamed up with Bryant, Coache and Caitlin Magura (Milford, CT) for a first place effort in the 200 Yard Medley Relays (1:55.80).

Coache had a first-place finish in the 50 Yard Butterfly (27.55) and a second in the 100 Yard Butterfly (1:00.81).  In addition to swimming on three Corsair relay teams, she had a third in the 50 Yard Freestyle (25.88).  Magura added a fourth in the 50 Yard Butterfly (28.27) along with a pair of relay efforts and Tara Conley (Westport, MA) had a fourth in the 1650 Yard Freestyle 19:01.02).
