CORSAIRS FOURTH IN LITTLE EAST WOMEN’S TENNIS
DANBURY, CT-The University of Massachusetts Dartmouth’s women’s tennis team finished fourth at the Little East Conference Women’s Tennis Championships, which were delayed, moved indoors and finished late Saturday evening at the Four Seasons Tennis Club.
The Corsairs finished with seven points. Rhode Island College finished first with 24 points, Plymouth State was next with 14, and Salem State was third with 11. Following the Corsairs were Bridgewater State and Southern Maine with six points each, and Western Connecticut State with four. UMass Boston withdrew.
Many of the matches were shortened to eight-game pro sets after the tournament was moved indoors due to inclement weather.
In singles, in the first flight, freshman Noelle Judd (Burlington, MA/Burlington HS) lost to Katie Welch of Southern Maine, 8-5, then fell to Whitney O’Leary of Plymouth State, 8-5. In the second flight, senior Sarah Charwick (Palmer, MA/Palmer HS) defeated Rebecca Jenkins of Bridgewater State, 8-2, then lost in the semi-finals to Megan Hall of Rhode Island College, 6-1, 6-3. In flight three, freshman Becky Bullock (Wrentham, MA/King Phillip HS) defeated Chelsea Parady of Southern Maine, 8-0, then lost to Erica Huckins of PSU in the semi-finals, 6-3, 6-3.
In the fourth flight, junior Katie Haepers (Wilmington, MA/Wilmington HS) defeated Western Connecticut State’s Tamra Butler, 8-5, then lost in the semi-finals to RIC’s Kseniya Gurvich, 6-2, 5-7, (12-10). In flight five, sophomore Nicole Cross (Dunstable, MA/Groton-Dunstable HS) defeated Jeannette Nguyen of Bridgewater State, 8-2, then fell in the semis to Tara Marchant of RIC, 5-7, 6-2, (10-8). In the sixth flight, freshman Allison DeAngelis (Milford, MA/Milford HS) defeated Elyse Campione of Southern Maine, 8-1, then dropped her semi-final match to Ashley Gorman of RICm 6-1, 6-2.
In doubles, in the first flight, Bullock and Judd lost to Plymouth State’s Whitney O’Leary and Erica Huckins, 8-5, then advanced to the consolation finals, where they won over Bridgewater State’s Caitlin Dermody and Angie Bizzozero by default. In flight two, and Haepers and Charwick defeated Becky Jenkins and Dianna Sullivan of Bridgewater State, 8-6, then lost in the semi-finals to Natasha Roman and Margaret Funk of RIC, 8-5. In the third flight, Cross and DeAngelis lost to Ashley Ludwig and Krista Golia of Western Connecticut State in the first round, 9-8 (6), then fell in the consolation championship to Emily Straub and Elyse Campione of Southern Maine, 8-3.
