                                        CORSAIR WOMEN’S TENNIS TEAM FALLS AT SALEM STATE, 5-4

 

SALEM, MA-Salem State won the crucial match at number three doubles and edged the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth’s women’s tennis team, 5-4, at SSU Tuesday evening.

 

The Corsairs teams split the singles matches, and each won one of the doubles matches. Junior Natasha Tretter (Gloucester, MA/Bishop Fenwick HS) and sophomore Alecia Newton (Montague, MA/Turners Falls HS) lost to Angela Palma and Sara Paunuk of the Vikings at number three doubles, 9-7.

 

Junior Katie Haepers (Wilmington, MA/Wilmington HS) won twice for the Corsairs. She defeated Becky Pydynkowski at number three singles, 7-5, 6-4, and teamed with sophomore Nicole Cross (Dunstable, MA/Groton-Dunstable HS) at number two doubles to defeat Pydynkowski and Alyssa Beaton, 8-4.

 

The Corsairs improved to 3-3 with the defeat. They will visit Johnson & Wales Thursday.

SINGLES-1-Kie Tanaka, SSU, defeated Noelle Judd, 6-1, 6-2.

                  2-Aprile Lozzi, SSU, defeated Sarah Charwick, 6-4 6-1.

                  3-Katie Haepers, UMD, defeated Becky Pydynkowski, 7-5, 6-4.

                  4-Alyssa Beaton, SSU, defeated Nicole Cross, 6-0, 6-1.

                  5-Natasha Tretter, UMD, defeated Angela Palma, 8-6, 6-1.

                  6-Alecia Newton, UMD, defeated Janelle Stuckley, 6-4, 6-4.

 

DOUBLES-1-Tanaka and Lozzi, SSU, defeated Judd and Charwick, 8-0.

                   2-Haepers and Cross, UMD, defeated Pydynkowski and Beaton, 8-4.

                   3-Palma and Sara Paunuk, SSU,  defeated Trotter and Newton, 9-7.
