GORHAM, Maine  --  Senior captain Katie Welch (Calais, Maine) earned a pair of victories to help the University of Southern Maine Huskies post a 5-4 victory over the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth Corsairs in a Little East Conference played Monday afternoon in the USM Field House.
The win stopped a six-match losing skid for the Huskies who improved to 2-7 overall and 2-4 in the conference.  UMass Dartmouth dropped to 5-6 overall and 2-4 in the conference.
Welch opened the day by combining with junior Emily Green (Cumberland, Maine/Catherine McAuley) for an 8-3 win at number one doubles.  Welch return to defeat freshman Noelle Judd (Burlington, Mass.) in straight sets at number one singles.
Other USM winners, all in singles matches, were juniors Chelsea and Casea Parady (Portland, Maine) and senior Emily Straubel (Littleton, Maine/Houlton HS).  The Huskies won four of the six singles matches to come from behind for the victory.
The Corsairs won two of the three doubles matches behind the combinations of senior Sarah Charwick (Palmer, Mass.) and junior Katie Haepers (Wilmington, Mass.) at number two, and sophomore Nicole Cross (Dunstable, Mass.) and freshman Allison DeAngelis (Milford, Mass.) at number three.
