CORSAIRS DOWN WCSU WOMEN’S TENNIS TEAM, 7-2

NORTH DARTMOUTH, MA-The first match on the new varsity courts at the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth was an artistic success as the Corsairs defeated Western Connecticut State, 7-2, Saturday afternoon at the UMass Dartmouth Athletic Complex.

The Corsairs won at two and three doubles, and won every singles except number one.

Freshman Becky Bullock (Wrentham, MA/King Phillip HS) and sophomore Nicole Cross (Dunstable, MA/Groton-Dunstable HS) each won twice for the Corsairs. Bullock defeated Caitlin McGaughan at number three singles, 6-2, 6-3, and combined with Cross to defeat McGaughan and Tamara Butler at number two doubles, 8-5. Cross downed Krista Golia at number five singles, 6-4, 6-1.

“It was a close match,” said UMass Dartmouth Head Coach Ralph Perry. “There were two three-set matches in singles. Junior Katie Haepers (Wilmington, MA/Wilmington HS) was sick, and she went three sets and won the third set, 8-6 in the tiebreaker. The doubles matches were close. A break here or there could have turned the match around.”

The Corsairs improved to 2-2 with the victory, while WCSU fell to 1-3. UMass Dartmouth will host Newbury Wednesday afternoon.

SINGLES-1-Kendra Sloat, WCSU, defeated Noelle Judd, 5-7, 6-2, 6-1. 
                 2-Sarah Chadwick, UMD, defeated Kate Poirier, 7-5, 6-1.
                 3-Becky Bullock, UMD, defeated Caitlin McGaughan, 6-2, 6-3.
                 4-Katie Haepers, UMD, defeated Tamra Butler, 6-2, 6-7, 7-6.
                 5-Nicole Cross, UMD, defeated Krista Golia, 6-4, 6-1.
                 6-Allison DeAngelis, UMD, defeated Ashley Ludwick, 3-6, 6-0, 6-3.

DOUBLES-1-Sloat and Poirier, WCSU, defeated Judd and Chadwick, 8-5.
                   2-Bullock and Cross, UMD, defeated McGaughan and Golia, 8-4.
                   3-Jess Sanderson and DeAngelis, UMD, defeated Golia and Ludwick, 8-5.
