UMass Dartmouth Corsairs turn heads at JWU Invitational
The UMass Dartmouth Corsairs Volleyball team turned lots of heads this past weekend at
the 5th annual Johnson & Wales University Invitational. The squad grabbed it's first win
of the season and the first collegiate women's victory for new head coach, Mike Holden, as
well as running some solid New England based teams to the wire.
On Friday night, perrenial Little East powerhouse, Western Connecticut, got more than they
expected as a fiesty and determined UMD squad ran them to a 5th game and almost an upset.
UMD had a 2-1 game lead but fell in the 5th. The match was scheduled to be a WCSU romp,
but UMD's new upbeat tempo and playing style had them push the 2003 LEC league champs
to their limit. WCSU won the match 23-30, 30-25, 16-30, 30-21, 15-11.
Back to work again on Saturday at 9am had UMD on its toes and ready for action. The Corsairs,
lead by senior captain Nikki Verroneau (Fairhaven, MA) jumped out 2-0 on the Wheaton Lyons
and continued the assault with a flurry of scrappy defensive plays and quick attacks. Dropping
the third set, the Corsairs showed they were not going to let it slip away and grabbed the victory
30-26, 30-27, 26-30, 30-28 to improve their season to 1-2 overall.
Next up at 100pm, the Corsairs took on Wesleyan in what was a repeat of Friday nights heartbreaker.
UMD had a 2-1 lead in the match but ran low on gas and couldn't finish the kill. Wesleyan won the tie
break while UMD dropped to 1-3 overall (25-30, 30-28, 30-21, 13-30, 10-15). 9 of the 12 roster players
at UMD saw action in this heated matchup. Lastly the Corsairs headed into the playoff round and drew Eastern Nazarene in a rematch from
Tuesday nights home opener loss. The Corsairs had revenge on the mind and in the heart, but the |
tank was running low from running every team to the limiit. ENC grabbed game one 25-30. UMD snagged
the second set 31-29 to tie it up. ENC took over 30-22 in the third and an nailed down the match 30-24 in
the fourth to send the exhausted Corsairs home. Despite only a single win in the event, the coaching staff and players were pleased with their performance.
The Corsairs turned alot of heads and got lots of compliments on their increased intensity and skill. UMD ran
every team to a battle and took a win home from a solid Wheaton team who managed to come in 3rd in the event. Senior outside hitter, Meghan Fenton (Dartmouth, MA) captured an All Tourney Team award for the Corsairs
who are now 1-4 and host Salve Regina on Tuesday at 7:00pm in the Tripp Athletic Center. Last Updated On: 9/1/06
