LEWISTON, ME-The University of Massachusetts Dartmouth volleyball team split their final two matches at the Bates Invitational Saturday.
The Corsairs lost to Johnson and Wales in five games, 23-30, 30-25, 30-25, 29-31 and 10-15. They came back and defeated host Bates in five games, 32-30, 26-30, 30-13, 17-30 and 21-19.
Sophomore middle hitter Nazareth Cardoso (Brockton, MA/Brockton HS) had 14 kills and 15 digs against JWU and nine kills, 12 digs and six aces against the Bobcats. Junior Lauren Daly (Brockton, MA/Brockton HS) had 35 assists, nine digs and three aces against the Wildcats, and 29 assists, nine kills, four aces and 2 blocks against Bates. Freshman middle hitter Hilary Teichart (Pocasset, MA/Bourne HS) had 14 kills and three blocks against BC, while freshman libero Aly Zagame (Greenfield, MA/Greenfield HS) had 19 digs against Johnson & Wales and 23 digs and four aces against Bates.
“This weekend was definitely a turning point for us,” said UMass Dartmouth Head Coach Jocelyn Costa. “We played a higher level of competition, and we stepped up our game. It was a good lead-in to our conference match against Plymouth State Tuesday.”
With the split, UMD is now 7-8 for the season. The Corsairs will host Plymouth State Tuesday evening.
