CORSAIRS DEFEAT UMASS BOSTON, DROP TWO AT RIC

 

PROVIDENCE, RI-The University of Massachusetts Dartmouth volleyball team won one of three matches at Rhode Island College this weekend.


The Corsairs defeated Little East Conference rival UMass Boston Saturday in four games, winning by 30-15, 26-30, 30-18 and 30-22. Earlier, UMass Dartmouth lost to host RIC, 24-30, 23-30 and 23-30. Friday evening, UMD lost to Eastern Connecticut State in three games.

 

Freshman middle hitter Hilary Teichart (Bourne, MA/Bourne HS) led the Corsairs against UMass Boston with 11 kills, freshman libero Melanie Staiger (Bourne, MA/Bourne HS) had 21 digs, and junior setter Lauren Daly (Brockton, MA/Brockton HS) had 42 assists. Against RIC, Teichart had eight killes, Staiger had 17 digs and sophomore middle hitter Nazareth Cardoso (Brockton, MA/Brockton HS) had 13 kills.

 

“We got off to a slow start agaubst Rhode Island College, but we came out a lot stronger against UMass Boston,” said UMass Dartmouth Head Coach Jocelyn Costa. “We moved the ball around better, and Hilary was aggressive and really stepped up her game.”

 

The Corsairs improved to 3-6 by defeating the Beacons. They will open their home season when they play Assumption Monday evening at 7:00 p.m. at the Tripp Athletic Center.
