CORSAIRS SPLIT, FINISH FIRST AT UMD INVITATIONAL
NORTH DARTMOUTH, MA-The University of Massachusetts Dartmouth volleyball team earned a split of their two matches on the second and final day of play at the UMass Dartmouth Invitational Tournament at the Tripp Athletic Center Saturday afternoon.
The Corsairs defeated Southern Maine, 30-12, 30-27 and 30-15, after falling to Wentworth in five games, 30-20, 27-30, 30-22, 24-30 and 12-15.
As a result, UMD, Babson and Wentworth tied for first place with 3-1 records. The Corsairs were placed first and Babson second after applying the tiebreaker, which was game win/loss percentage.
Freshman middle hitter Hilary Teichart (Bourne, MA/Bourne HS) and sophomore middle hitter Nazareth Cardoso (Brockton, MA/Brockton HS) led the Corsairs against Wentworth with 21 kills each. Junior setter Lauren Daly (Brockton, MA/Brockton HS) had 50 assists.
Daly and Teichart each had eight kills against Southern Maine, while Daly added 29 assists. Senior outside hitter Kerrie Mandeville had 10 kills, and freshman libero Aly Zagame (Greenfield, MA/Greenfield HS) has 12 digs. Daly was named the Most Valuable Player of the tournament.
“It came down to a three-way tie, and we were glad to finish first,” said UMass Dartmouth Head Coach Jocelyn Costa. “Kerrie really stepped up her game on the opposite side, and Lauren was definitely a leader on the floor. Aly did a good job for us on defense and with her passing.”
The Corsairs are now 11-11. They will host Worcester State Tuesday night.
