Student Government represents all students by popular election, and functions on the UMass Dartmouth campus through the Student Senate. This body is the voice of the students in school affairs, as members are appointed to serve on various faculty and administrative committees. One of the primary functions of the Student Senate is to approve the formation of new organizations and to provide funding so that the interest of every student group is represented. The Senate consists of 36 senators who are elected to a one year term in the spring semester: three from each of the four classes; one for each of the Commuter, Resident, and Graduate Seat; and eighteen from five colleges based on proportions. Students are encouraged to participate actively in student government.
The purpose of the UMass Dartmouth Student Senate is:
- To promote student rights as delineated in Article III of the Senate Constitution;
- To provide a forum for the expression of student views and interests;
- To provide leadership in the areas of cooperation and understanding among the students of this University;
- To act as the students' liaisons to the UMass Community, the Commonwealth's higher educational system and the government of the Commonwealth;
- To facilitate student rights, views, and interests by recommending policy to the University, the UMass System, and the government of the Commonwealth;
- To endeavor to provide adequate funding for programs affecting curricular, extra curricular, and cultural activities; and
- To coordinate student political life with other student groups and organizations.

WHY YOU SHOULD JOIN: By joining the senate, members will have a principal role in events that contribute to making a difference in UMD, which not only looks good on a resume, but also prepares one for the additional responsibilities involved in the real world. Student senators are also involved in various committees such as the campus center activities, computer users, cultural affairs, ethical standards, financial aid, food services, honorary degree, judicial affairs, lecture series, library activities, new and transfer student admissions, public relations, public safety, recycling, student activities' finance, student faculty academic affairs, and student senate constitution and elections.
