Affinity Group FAQ

What is an Affinity Group?
An affinity group is made up of clubs that register with the Office of Student Activities. They are clubs that are smaller than the major organizations but when thy come together they create something that is equal to the power of a major organization.

Why is there a need for Affinity Groups?
There is a need for Affinity Groups because the OSA feels that the RSOs can learn a great deal from each other, and can form a community within themselves to solve problems, co sponsored events, and open the lines of communication.

How are the Affinity Groups set up?
After doing extensive research on the models used by other institutions, the Office of Student Activities came up with 5 groups, purposely leaving out the major organizations on campus. The categories are as follows:

Academic - These organizations are dedicated to taking learning outside of the classroom!
Social - These organizations are all about getting together to have fun through events and activities.
CommUNITY - The organizations listed here are drawn together by their sense of culture. This category has people from many ethnic, religious, and lifestyle choices.
Current Issues - This category is reserved for those groups and organizations that are dedicated to what?s going on- right now. This involves volunteer groups, political groups, and other groups who are dedicated to doing something with the community.
Performing Arts - These organizations are fairly self-explanatory. These are all of the dance, theater, and music groups on campus.

So now that these groups have been established, what does that mean and how can we connect?
Every month, there are three meetings for affinity groups to discuss information and announcements made to the groups so they can stay connected with what is going on at the OSA. There is also time for the groups to talk to each other, about programming and problems within their organization. Groups can also talk about things that are happening with them to see if there is another group who dealing with a similar issue so maybe they can get together and solve things.
